Ngongapongha Charles, King of the Mountain (01.03.2004)
Some 344 athletes took part in the ninth Mount Cameroon Race of Hope.
The weekend was an exciting one for the people of the South West Province and Buea in particular. Athletes from Cameroon as well as from other parts of the world converged in Buea, at the foot of the Mount Fako, to compete in the ninth edition of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope. Thousands thronged the Molyko stadium to pay tribute to courageous and ambitious sportsmen and women who were in quest of a dream to conquer the chariots of the gods.
As early as 5:30 am, lovers of the mountain race trooped to the stadium to watch the athletes take off. Present at the take off were members of government, parliamentarians, traditional rulers, religious rulers as well as school children. Take off was at exactly 7: 05 am. The turn out was not great as compared to last year due to the fact that most people were involved in the Buea Trade Fair close by. The Trade Fair however was a booster to the mountain race. The cultural twist of the event was also evident with dance groups from the South West and North West provinces making their presence felt.
After medical screening, 344 athletes, among them 37 ladies and 12 foreigners, took part in the race. Nine relay teams participated. The foreign athletes came from eight countries notably France, United States, Britain, Rwanda, Burundi, Australia and Nigeria. The peculiarity in this year`s race was the presence of many female athletes in the competition and also the presence of athletes who came to the race not to compete but just to participate. The female athletes were able to prove their worth. Apart from
that, the athletes were dressed in different colours. The male athletes were dressed in white, ladies in red and the relay teams in Orange. This made it possible to distinguish the different groups of athletes.
There was no major surprise in this year’s race. The same winners of last year mounted the podium. In the men`s series, last year`s winner, Ngongapongha Charles was the fastest, finishing the race in 4h30`39". He beat his last year`s record of 4h 32`. He was followed by Kongnyui Shey Joseph and Mbacha Eric in 4h 36` 56" and 4h 54` 21" respectively. In the ladies race, Ngwang Catherine came first doing it in 5h 29` 05". Wirngo Immaculate came second in 5h 42` 44" and Surka Dorie came third after 6h 00` 30". The queen of the mountain and last year`s winner, Sarah Etonge finished fourth. Several prizes were awarded to the athletes. The first winner received the sum of CFA 1.500.000 francs, the second CFA 1.000.000 francs, the third CFA 500.000 frs, the fourth CFA 250.000frs, and the fifth CFA 150.000frs. Athletes from the sixth to the 10 got CFA 50.000frs each, those from the 11th to the 20th CFA 25.000frs and those from the 21st to the 50th position got CFA 10.000frs.
The first relay team went home with CFA 900.000frs, the second CFA 600.000frs and the third CFA 300.000frs. Each athlete received a price of CFA 10.000frs for participating in the competition. A special prize of CFA 150.000frs was awarded to Sarah Etonge for her efforts in encouraging the younger generations. A trophy, known as the "Star of Hope", was also awarded to foreign athletes as a souvenir of Cameroon when they get back to their countries of origin.
