Yaounde Youth Tournament Enters Semis (30.12.2002)
Youth in three categories will play semi-final matches today and tomorrow ahead of final slated for January 4, 2003.
A Christmas football tournament that started on December 23, 2002 grouping some young boys within Yaounde gets into the semi finals today. The competition dubbed "olympic budding talents — Iya Mohamed Christmas 2002," is intended to encourage young people and to revive football within the Yaounde cosmopolitan city.
Some 12 teams in three sub groups have been competing in the tournament that is supported by the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT). The teams have been playing on the away and return leg basis with the top two already qualified for the semis in each group.
The three groups fall within the categories of pupils, minor and cadet. For the pupils, the club named, Semences Olympiques tops the league with 4 points after playing two matches. They are separated from runners-up, St Dominique by plus three goals difference against one for Semences
Olympiques. In the sub group of minor, St Dominique counts 6 points in two straight wins. Champion de Dem trails them with 4 points. For the cadet tournament, the club, Emergence is the first with six points and another St Dominique club comes second with a treasure of three points. For the semi-final matches, the last club will have the challenge of meeting the first club in each sub group. By this token, Semences Olympiques will clash with Champion de Dem for the pupils’ sub group. Similarly, Nancy Stars will lock horns with St Dominique in the minor sub group. It will be another Nancy Stars that will welcome Emergence FC for the cadet semi-final game. The matches that are regularly played at the Ahmadou Ahidjo annex stadium pull much crowd especially during the late afternoon hurdles. The tournament is a breeding ground for young talents and most kids who have made their marks are being tipped for selection by some club officials. The competition is a forum for the football youngsters to excel.
