Yaounde Omnisport Stadium Re-opens, But… (23.12.2003)
Renovation work continues on the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium which exceptionally opened it’s gates last Sunday.
After six months closure, the Yaounde Omnisport stadium opened its gates to spectators last Sunday. Cameroon was receiving Mali in one of the day two encounters for the eliminatories of the 2004 Olympic Games. Generally, spectators were impressed at the quality of the playground. The turf was green and evenly covered the pitch. The downpour during the encounter left no traces as the rain water was immediately absorbed. Gone are the days of potholes, mud and stagnant water on the pitch.
Most spectators went back home with the impression that the renovation at the Yaounde Omnisport stadium, that began on July 21, 2003, was complete. Far from it. The stadium is not yet open to the public. "The public should be patient as the renovation work continues and will take some time. The stadium was exceptionally opened for the Cameroon/Mail encounter and in the days ahead will again be specially opened for the Cup of Cameroon", the Director of the stadium, Bella Eves, said. He explained that the replanting of grass on the pitch is just part of the vast renovation programme which will be implemented in stages. This first stage involved
the most urgent repairs. These included the playground, Tribune A which was broken and isolated during matches to avoid accidents and the lighting system. Last Sunday’s encounter was an occasion to assess the first phase of the renovation work.
But even when the stadium will be completely refurbished, it will be reserved for special encounters. "The problem with the Omnisport stadium was the frequency of matches. They were too many. When the grass is over used, there is no possibility of repairing it ", the Director of the Stadium explained. It is for this reason that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is on a vast project to renovate other stadiums in Yaounde. The two Omnisport annex stadiums will also be given a face lift. A tribune with 300 seats will be built for "Stade annex A", and turf planted on the pitch. The Military Stadium is also being renovated. A tribune with 2000 seats has been put up. Matches with no great importance will be played on these pitches.
With regards to security, the Director of stadium is confident that the Yaounde Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium is still very solid. Experts from the Ministry of Public Works recently conducted resistance test on the structure and claim it can receive more than 52 000 spectators.
