Cameroon qualify for CHAN, Nigeria walk tight rope (28.03.2010)
Cameroon became the first country to qualify for next year’s Championship of African Nations (CHAN) after beating Congo 3-0 in Yaounde on Saturday.
Second-half goals by Eyenga Anicet, Julian and Edgar Momasso Saly secured the win for the Indomitable Lions.
This also ensured a 4-1 aggregate victory for the home side.
It means Cameroon are through to the second edition of the tournament to be played in Sunday after missing the maiden competition held in Ivory Coast last year.
Congo will play the loser of the tie between DR Congo and Gabon in May for a chance to play at the tournament.
Meanwhile, Tanzania thrashed Somalia 6-0 in Dar-es-Salam on Saturday to reach the final qualifying round of CHAN.
First half goals by John Boko and Kigi Makasi put the home side in a comfortable before the break.
Further strikes by Mrisho Ngasa, Erasto Nyoni, Musa Mgosi and Nadir Haroub sealed the resounding victory for the Taifa Stars.
Tanzania advance on a 6-0 aggregate as Somalia forfeited their home because of the lack of security in their country.
Taifa Stars will meet Rwanda in the second round in May to decide who will qualify for the tournament to be held in Sudan next year.
Elsewhere, a hat-trick by Tony Odur helped Uganda to brush Burundi aside with a 4-0 win to qualify for the last round.
The Bunamwaya striker put the Cranes in the lead on 24 minutes and doubled his tally three minutes after the break.
Odur made it 3-0 in the in the 66th minute before Musa Mudde sealed the win with 12 minutes remaining.
This means Uganda reach the last round of qualifiers thanks to their 5-1 aggregate win.
Meanwhile, Nigeria are hard pressed to overturn a 2-0 deficit against Niger on Sunday to be able to qualify for the tournament in Sudan.
Several teams are aslo set to book their places for the final tournament to be held in Sudan as the first round, second leg matches are played.
Nigeria are regarded as one of the powerhouses of African football but are yet to feature in the CHAN, a biennial tournament for players from the
domestic leagues of their countries and which kicked off in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, last year.
Perennial rivals Ghana stopped Nigeria in the qualifiers for the inaugural championship and will go on to reach the grand finale where they lost to DR Congo.
Two first-half goals by Niger’s Mena have now mounted pressure on young coach Daniel Amokachi to win big in front is what is expected to be a sold-out crowd at the Sani Abacha stadium in Kano, northern Nigeria.
Nigeria have drafted leading scorer in the domestic league, Ahmed Musa, for this must-win return leg.
Musa, 18 only in October, has thus far scored 14 goals for Kano Pillars and would most likely be the toast of the crowd on Sunday.
Nigeria assistant coach Fatai Amoo has predicted the team will beat Niger and qualify for the tournament proper.
“We ought to have drawn the match in Niger, but we lacked bite upfront and so wasted several chances. On Sunday, we will attack from the first whistle, win well and qualify for the Championship of African Nations,” he said.
Beaten finalists at the maiden edition of the competition, Ghana, were held to a goalless draw in Burkina Faso a fortnight ago and are now expected to make home advantage count on Sunday.
Ghana coach, Herbert Addo, has called up four new players including Kwabena Yaro of Asante Kotoko and Joseph Ato-Bissah from Sekondi Hasaacas to boost his squad.
The other match in this zone will be between Togo and the Ivory Coast.
The first leg will be played in Lome this weekend after it was deferred.
Defending champions DR Congo are tipped to book their flight to Sudan at home this weekend after they took a 2-1 lead from their first leg against Gabon.
South Africa have gone in with a squad of mostly fringe players and youngsters, those who do not compete regularly for their clubs, but they will still hope to finish the job against Botswana after the first leg on Gaborone ended in a 0-0 draw.
Zimbabwe should also progress after they won 2-1 in Swaziland.
Fifteen teams will emerge from the qualifier to join hosts Sudan for the final tournament.
