Lions Poised to Devour Squirrels (03.06.2005)
The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon will face the Squirrels of Benin tomorrow.
The race for the 2006 African Cup of Nations and World Cup will, this weekend, enter a decisive phase in Group 3. The six teams of the group will be in action as from today when the Elephants of Côte d’Ivoire will take on the Libyan national team in Tripoli. The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, on their part, will face the Squirrels of Benin tomorrow. Yesterday, the team, en route to Cotonou, had a stop over at the Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport where they communioned with some of their fans.
Tomorrow’s match in Cotonou, Benin, is one of the Day 7 encounters of the on-going joint eliminatories for the 2006 World Cup and African Cup of Nations. Coach Artur Jorge and the 18 players selected to defend the national colours arrived in Cotonou last night after a four-day training session in the outskirts of Paris. During the preparation, focus was on physical fitness, tactical options and above all a collective play style.
Judging from the stakes, it would be a decisive encounter for the Lions. The match has been termed “very important” by the coach. In a group where four teams still stand fair chances of qualifying for the World Cup, each goal counts. It is after Saturday’s encounter that the Lions would know exactly where they stand in the race for Germany and Egypt 2006. A victory will raise hopes, a draw dampen aspirations, while a defeat will mean they might have to give up.
Well placed Côte d’Ivoire with 15 points would do everything to continue to head Group 3. Egypt and Libya, who are toeing Cameroon with 10 points each would struggle to leap ahead so as to continue nurturing ambition for Germany 2006. Benin and Sudan, with two points each, have their honour to save. Proof of this is the fact that the Benin national team has spent two months in
Europe, training hard in view of the match against Cameroon.
Although Benin has been one of the principal point-distributors in Group C, Cameroon is leaving nothing to chance. The four-day training in the outskirts of Paris could be considered short when compared to the months of training put in preparation by the other teams in the group. But the coach, Artur Jorge, thinks it was enough time for Captain Song and his mates to see how they can fine-tune and blend the wealth of individual talents to build a solid team. The test match against Moissy Cramayel, a French fourth division team (amateur league) league served as a barometer to measure the state of preparedness of the Lions.
The four goals scored by the national team is an indication that Artur Jorge’s boys can still create and materialise scoring opportunities; something that has been rare in their recent outings. In the same light, the fact that the goal area of the Indomitable Lions remained undefiled throughout the encounter is an indication that Idriss Carlos Kameni and Souleymanou Hamidou are alert while the Bill Tchato, Salomon Olembe, Pierre Wome Nlend, etc are doing a good job in the defence. The match, above all, helped to ensure that the team comes up with a playing style to ensure that a minimum cohesion is established.
The Lions are therefore, aware of the fact that, if they must satisfy Cameoronians, they have no other option but to fight for victory tomorrow. And the Lions can do it. The two goal keepers, six defenders, six midfielders and four attackers selected for tomorrow’s match are among the finest products of African football in Europe today. They have been making headline news in their respective clubs. And this time, Artur Jorge is bent on breaking the jinx that have been trailing these stars; that of not being able to put on a good performance when in the national team.
