Lions to face French test (20.08.2001)
The Senegal national team will begin their preparations for the African Nations Cup and the World Cup with a friendly against French side Rennes.
Senegal, who have qualified for next year`s World Cup Finals for the first time in their history, will play the French First Division side on September 1, as The Lions of Teranga bid for their top form leading up to the African Nations Cup in Mali.
Speaking on Pan African Radio which is based in Gabon, Senegal`s assistant coach Abdoulaye Sarr expressed his delight at the level of support Senegal have received since making history and qualifying for the World Cup Finals.
Shortly before flying to France to meet up with coach Bruno Metsu ahead of the match against Rennes, to celebrate the French club`s centenary anniversary, Sarr said: "We have received the best support we could ever ask for from the sports ministry and the Football Federation, and our principal objective is to win the African Nations Cup as a run-up to the World Cup.
"We believe we have the players, the pedigree, the financial clout and above all the determination to win this competition in Mali."
Metsu has been in France since August 13 where he has met a crop
of Senegalese professionals plying their trade in France.
Another reason for Metsu`s premature stay in France ahead of the game, is the fact he is trying to arrange a showpiece friendly game with World and European champions France.
Sarr went on to reveal: "We are looking at the prospect of having a game with world champions France. But first, we hope to take on Japan in Nantes in October and talk with as many European federations as possible. We need to play against some of the best in the world to acquire experience and the necessary psychological boost before next summer," said the assistant coach.
Senegal will be hoping to make history when they do turn out in the African Nations Cup, as they have never won the competition before. Although, after qualifying for the World Cup Finals, and with players of Jules Bocande`s calibre, The Lions of Teranga will be hoping to go further than the semi-finals - the stage they were eliminated at in Algeria in 1990.
They did look in good shape in Nigeria in January last year, although The Super Eagles came out on top in Lagos following two strikes from Julius Aghaohwa - cancelling out Khalilou Fadiga`s first-half strike.
