The Fate Of African Teams In Germany 2006 (11.12.2005)

Following the recent shift of power in African football, we will be watching four African teams making their debut in the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.
African powerhouses with the likes of Cameroon and Nigeria are considered to have the experience to participate in such tournaments but failed to qualify for the 2006 finals. This time around many will be looking forward to seeing how well the continent’s new representatives Angola, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Togo will perform.
Ivory Coast are one of Africa’s most impressive teams and fared on well during the qualifying rounds and also in recent friendly matches. They have a good side with players like Didier Drogba of Chelsea and Kolo Touré of Arsenal. However, they are in Group C, which is considered as one of the toughest groups alongside Argentina, Serbia & Montenegro and Holland. They stand a chance of emerging as a surprise package in this group and will play the group`s opening match against Argentina.
Angola qualified for the World Cup finals ahead of favorites Nigeria and will face Mexico, Iran and Portugal in Group D. The former Portuguese colony will play their opening match against Portugal and Coach Luis Oliveira Goncalves will be hoping his team will cause an upset for the Europeans. Even though they should not be looked down upon, it would be tough for Angola to progress to the next stage.
After a long wait to qualify for their first World Cup finals, Ghana are another impressive side to have qualified for the 2006
event and are paired alongside Italy, USA and Czech Republic in Group E. This is a tough group for the West Africans and any positive result in their opening match against Italy will highly boost the morale of the Black Stars who have top players with the likes Chelsea’s Michael Essien and Fenerbahce’s Stephan Appiah and they will be hoping to progress to the next phase.
Togo face France, Switzerland and Korea in Group G. Coached by Nigerian Stephen Keshi, Togo impressed many during the qualifying rounds and qualified from a group that included 2002 World Cup quarterfinalists Senegal. However, they would need to redouble that impressive form that saw them through, maintain a high team spirit and need some amount of luck to progress to the next stage. Among players to watch out for is France-based Emmanuel Adebayor.
Tunisia have qualified for their fourth World Cup finals and are drawn in Group H with Spain, Ukraine and Saudi Arabia. The reigning African champions have never crossed the first rounds in the tournament and will be hoping to make an impact this time around.
Even though it’s too early to make predictions on how far African teams can reach, in 2002 Senegal made their debut in the finals and beat defending champions France in the opening match. They reached the quarterfinals, which was an impressive record for an African team making their first appearance in tournament.
