BALLACK QUESTIONS GERMANY`S ABILITIES (31.05.2002)
Germany`s big hope Michael Ballack should be fit to play when Germany open their World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia on Saturday but he has raised questions about how far the three-times world champions can go in the tournament.
"We are not a great team yet," the key playmaker said. "We are still developing, even if we do have many good players in our squad," added the 25-year-old, who is recovering from a bruised right foot.
Ballack, who carries much of Germany`s expectations since fellow creative midfielders Sebastian Deisler and Mehmet Scholl had to pull out, will probably not be 100 percent fit.
"It`s getting better," he said of his injury, which has hampered him for weeks. "There are many things I can do with my right foot without feeling any pain. I assume I will be playing on Saturday."
Coach Rudi Voeller, who has had more than his share of injury worries, rested Ballack in Germany`s first training sessions, said Ballack is still having problems with his shooting. So vital is Ballack to Germany, however, that he is expected to play even if he has to take
pain-killers.
Voeller, whose team will also face Ireland and Cameroon in group E, has named reaching the knock-out stage as his minimum aim, adding that he did not rule out a few good surprises if that could be achieved.
The softly-spoken Ballack was a little more cautious when assessing the chances of a team who have made at least the last eight at every World Cup since 1954.
"We all want to go as far as we can in the tournament but it`s true that we don`t know exactly where we stand," said Ballack, the only genuine world class player left at the heart of the Germany team. "In that respect our first match will be crucial."
A fine combination of unique skills, playmaking qualities and scoring instinct, Ballack is keen to play down his high profile. "I am pleased with all the nice things that have been said about me but I regard myself as only a part of the team," he said.
"I know from experience that you go through highs and lows in this game. What I have to do is keep working hard and giving my best while not putting too much pressure on myself."
