Wome misses World Cup qualifier (03.07.2004)

As pressure mounts on both Cameroon and the Ivory Coast ahead of their crucial 2006 World Cup and African Cup of Nations finals, it has been declared Pierre Wome Nlend will miss the game because of injury.
Cameroon’s team doctor, Olivier Assamba announced in a press conference that Wome pulled a muzzle on his right thigh during the friendly against Canon Yaounde on Wednesday and has not been able to recover.
Assamba added that it was not a major problem as Wome simply needed long rest to get well.
However, with the return of Mohamadou Idrissou, coach Winfried Schafer has been offered another option at the left wing. Idrissou has missed the first two qualifiers because of an age problem.
Fifa recently closed the inquiry to determine whether Idrissou was born in 1977 or 1980 and informed FECAFOOT that they could go
ahead to field Idrissou.
In the press conference on Friday, Schafer said he will ‘use all available human resources’ to win on Sunday. Cameroonians and Schafer are hoping that the team begin scoring many goals against Ivory Coast to regain confidence.
Meantime, Ivory Coast coach Henri Michel is also hoping to win. In another press conference Michel said the best scenario for his team on Sunday will be to score in the 90th minute to beat Cameroon.
He added that they were highly motivated by their win over Egypt two weeks ago in Cairo and wanted to end the myth that Cameroon have always defeated Ivory Coast in official matches.
For top striker Didier Drogba their great form was based on good preparation. While Cameroon and other were playing the African Cup of Nations finals early 2004, Ivory Coast were preparing for the 2006 World Cup qualifiers.
