I fear for my life says Weah as Liberian legend announces retirmement (24.01.2002)
BAMAKO
Liberia football legend George Weah said he feared for his life in his homeland on Thursday, accusing president Charles Taylor`s government of targeting him for violence.
Announcing his intention to quit international football after Liberia`s campaign in the 2002 African Nations Cup, Weah said in an interview with AFP he would only return to Monrovia if there was a change of government.
Weah, a former world footballer of the year who enjoyed a glittering career with a series of top clubs across Europe, said his high profile left Liberia`s rulers feeling threatened.p
The 35-year-old, who has also won acclaim for his work as an ambassador with United Nations children`s movement UNICEF, accused Taylor of jealously viewing him as a potential political rival.
"I have children who have still to grow up and go to school," said Weah, a father of three. "I don`t want somebody to come and kill me because of my popularity," the former AC Milan and Paris St Germain star said.
Weah said his home in Liberia had been burnt down and shops he owned taken over.
"They have already burnt my house down," Weah said. "They`ve repossessed my shops. It`s not safe, I don`t want something to happen to me before my children grow up. I`m afraid ... I don`t feel safe.
"The message of the president is that I am a target," he said.
Weah said he had enjoyed good relations with Liberia`s previous president Samuel Doe, and believed that had possibly weighed heavily against him.
"I knew Doe well. I was close to him because I was captain of Liberia and that`s normal," Weah told AFP.
"Doe was comfortable with my popularity. So he helped me a lot to build up a team - but Taylor doesn`t want to accept the fact that I am popular. He`s jealous. He thinks that I want to be president.
"Doe never thought that. He thought I gave the country a good image, so he helped me. I`m not a politician," added Weah.
Weah noted that former Nigerian international Daniel Amokachi had once reportedly declared his intention to run for president of his country without rebuke.
"I once saw in a newspaper that
Amokachi said when he finished football he wanted to be president of Nigeria - but who`s going to kill him? That`s democracy. In all constitutions all citizens have a right to be president."
Explaining his decision to sever all links with the Liberian national team, Weah said he was sick of the political interference surrounding the set-up.
"Football has gone into politics and I don`t want to be part of the politics. It has gone political in every sense - jealousy, accusation, from government, from players," he said.
"The president of Liberia is against us," he said. "The government is against us. They are jealous of us. I don`t deserve that.
"I resign ... I resign as a player because I can`t travel because of family problems.
"And as a technical director, I`m out. I`ll play for the moment but after the tournament I`m finished," he said.
Liberia`s Nations Cup campaign has been marred by a row between players and the national association over money. Weah was furious that the efforts of his team-mates - when they came within a whisker of qualifying for the World Cup and reached the Nations Cup for only the second time - went unrewarded.
"Everything I do, I do for free," said Weah, who has helped with the team`s expenses. "I do it from the heart.
"I was not happy with the team`s treatment. We qualified for the Nations Cup, but we didn`t see any money. We almost qualified for the World Cup and we didn`t see anything.
"We played the first match and didn`t see anything. It`s not normal."
Weah said after the tournament in Mali he would settle in New York, where he has just finished building a luxury 10-bedroom home.
"I have built my dream home in Long Island, it has been finished for four months. I`m going to stay comfortable and my children are happy going to school there," he said, ruling out a return to Liberia.
"I will only return to Liberia if the Government changes. With this government I won`t go back to Liberia. They don`t want me. Life is very important.
"If something happens (to me) some people will cry for a week. But after that, it`s my children who will suffer."
