Cameroon launch salvage operation against Sudan (25.03.2005)

Cameroon must defeat Sudan in Yaounde on Sunday to keep alive hopes of a fifth consecutive FIFA World Cup finals appearance.

A series of disappointing away results have left the `Indomitable Lions` four points adrift of pacesetters Ivory Coast at the halfway mark of their 10-fixture Group 3 programme.

Libya held Cameroon 0-0 in Benghazi, Egypt triumphed 3-2 in a Cairo and Sudan were deprived of a shock win in Omdurman by a last-minute equaliser from striker Joseph-Desire Job.

Cameroon were outclassed in an away friendly against 2006 World Cup hosts Germany soon after the Sudan debacle, leading to the sacking of German coach Winfried Schafer and hiring of Artur Jorge from Portugal.

His new-look squad pipped Senegal 1-0 in a friendly last month, offering hope of a chance in fortunes for the four-time African Nations Cup winners, whose timid quarter-final exit from the 2004 edition triggered the slump.

    "The win over Senegal was

encouraging after all the criticism of the team. I believe we can win our remaining five World Cup qualifiers and reach the finals," said the vastly experienced Jorge.

Uncapped defender Benoit Ekotto and striker Seidou Alioum have been included in a 23-man squad that includes veteran defender Rigobert Song and reigning African Footballer of the Year Samuel Eto`o.

Barcelona striker Eto`o has been consistently impressive for the Spanish table toppers and could be the star to unlock a Sudanese defence that conceded five goals in Ivory Coast before holding Cameroon.

Sudan warmed up for Yaounde with a 3-1 friendly victory over East and Central Africa champions Ethiopia, but coach Abdalla Mazda knows it will be far harder at the 60,000-capacity Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium.

"Fixtures do not come much tougher than Cameroon in Yaounde. They have a new coach desperate to prove himself and will always rank among the powerhouses of African football," confessed Mazda.
