Cameroon captain promises the cup (10.02.2008)

Accra, Ghana - Cameroon captain Rigobert Song on Saturday vowed to win the Africa Cup of Nations for his country. The Indomitable Lions face Egypt in Sunday`s final in the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra, having earlier in the competition lost 4-2 in a group game against the Pharaohs.

Song told a press conference in Accra ahead of the match that the players had always been confident that they would win the trophy. "We want to return home to Cameroon on Monday.

"It is a public holiday in Cameroon on Monday, it is Youth Day and we want to parade the trophy in Yaounde on Monday."

Song, who plays for Galatasaray in Turkey, dismissed talk of being to old. The 31-year-old is playing in his seventh Nations Cup tournament and holds the record for number of games played.

He could become the first player with team-mates Samuel Eto`o and Geremi Njitap to win three Nations Cup winners` medals.

"I simply laugh when people say I am to old. I am enjoying my game and I enjoy playing football. I am still playing well, so there is no reason why I

    should stop playing.

"I am sure the day will come when I stop playing football, but that day is not yet here. And when I do stop, I will continue working in the sport."

Cameroon coach Otto Pfister, who rebuked an official who asked him why he was not wearing the official Cameroon tracksuit top and told him that he was in charge of the national team and should leave him alone, said he was confident ahead of the game.

"The final will be a totally different game than the group game. You can`t say that because we lost to Egypt in the group phase we will lose again.

"We hammered Zambia 5-1, Egypt drew with them, so just because one team wins one match, that does not mean that they will win the next one."

The 70-year-old German, who lost the Nations Cup final with Ghana in 1992, said that he was not concerned about his side`s record against Egypt.

"Just because we have lost more games against them does not mean anything for the final. That is just a statistic, but it means nothing."
