Serie A: Inter Milan go top (24.09.2009)
Internazionale went top of Serie A as they turned on the style in a 3-1 victory over Napoli at the San Siro. Samuel Eto’o, Diego Milito and Lucio were all on target in the first-half as Inter raced into a three-goal lead. Ezequiel Lavezzi pulled a goal a back before the break, but it was little more than a consolation as Inter saw out the second half at a canter. The victory moves them a point clear at the Serie A summit after Sampdoria lost their first game of the season away at Fiorentina. After a fairly indifferent start to the campaign, Jose Mourinho’s side were in need of a performance to silence the doubters who were already questioning the wisdom of selling inspirational striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. His replacement at the San Siro was Eto’o and the Cameroon striker needed only three minutes to remind the home fans that there was life after the Swede.
The visitors’ defending in the opening 45 minutes left a lot to be desired, and Inter were quick to capitalise on indecision in the six-yard box with Eto’o stabbing home a corner from close range after Milito had been denied.
And within two minutes, the hosts had doubled their advantage with Milito adding to his brace against Cagliari with a neat finish after being fed through the middle by the marauding Maicon.
There was more than a hint of offside about the goal but with Napoli at sixes and sevens there was no doubting the home side’s supremacy.
Napoli had chances to pull a goal back with Quagliarella heading over from close range and then drawing a fine save from Cesar from a similar position six minutes later.
But Inter were firmly in control and after Eto’o missed a glorious chance to add to their advantage on 20 minutes, when he failed to lift the ball over Morgan De Sanctis when through on goal, Lucio added a third on the half-hour mark.
The defender found himself unmarked to head home a corner from Wesley Sneijder to take the game out of Napoli’s reach.
The third goal allowed Inter to take their foot of the pedal and the visitors were quick to capitalise with Lavezzi side-footing into the back of the net from five yards seven minutes

before the break.
But it was not the beginning of a comeback as Inter continued to dominate and rarely looked troubled in an uneventful second half.
It was the hosts who came closest to adding to their tally after the break when Walter Samuel drew a fine save from De Sanctis on 68 minutes after Napoli failed to clear a corner from the right.
Napoli looked a beaten foe a failed to create a single chance of note in the second half despite the industrious efforts of Lavezzi and Fabio Quagliarella to create an opening.
Inter, on the other hand, never looked likely to let the visitors back into the encounter and played out the remainder of the game in second gear.
Inter went above this Saturday’s opponents Sampdoria, who dropped points for the first time this term when headers from Stevan Jovetic and Alberto Gilardino either side of the break sealed Fiorentina’s 2-0 home win.
Juventus can reclaim the lead and go two clear at the top with a win at Genoa on Thursday.
Milan’s inconsistent start to the campaign continued with a 1-0 loss at Udinese, where Antonio Di Natale scored midway through the first half.
Mauricio Isla broke into the Milan box and when his effort came back off the post, Di Natale could not fail to score.
The Italy striker also struck the post while Milan, who started with Ronaldinho on the bench and had Mathieu Flamini dismissed for a second booking late on, hit the bar through Alessandro Nesta’s header.
Rookie coach Leonardo has already presided over two defeats from five league games this term but limited recruits in the transfer window mean the Brazilian has little room to manoeuvre.
Francesco Totti converted a late penalty to give Roma a thrilling 3-3 draw at Palermo in pouring Sicilian rain. The pitch was so waterlogged that the ball often became stuck in puddles but Totti made sure he blasted the spotkick home.
Bottom side Atalanta drew 0-0 at home to Catania in Antonio Conte’s first match in charge, which was slightly marred by scuffles between rival supporters in Bergamo before kickoff. Conte was also sent to the stands for protesting late on.
