Nigeria to tell World Cup stars how to behave (13.03.2002)

Nigeria will crack down on player power by introducing a code of conduct for their World Cup squad ahead of the finals in May and June, officials told AFP Tuesday.
"We will introduce a code of conduct before the World Cup kicks off," secretary-general of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) Taiwo Ogunjobi said.
"We don`t expect any more messing around because everybody will now know what is at stake. This type of thing is done all over the world so Nigeria should not be an exception," he added.
Nigeria are drawn against Argentina, England and Sweden in the first round of the World Cup which kicks off May 31.
The `Super Eagles`, as the Nigerian team are known, have been labelled `Super-egos` following lapses in camp discipline and bickerings over money at last month`s African Nations Cup in Mali.
New coach Adegboye Onigbinde, a 64-year-old former schoolteacher, has already warned he will crack down on indiscipline in the team.
NFA officials now say a code of conduct will clearly spell out how much each player will earn
whilefeaturing for the country so as to avoid the now familiar clashes between players and officials over money.
At the Nations Cup, the Eagles came close to boycotting training for their semi-final against Senegal after they accused officials of shortchanging them in respect of their ticket refunds.
The team had also stayed away from a pre-Nations Cup friendly against Egypt in January to protest against the non-payment of over 70,000 dollars donated to the team for qualifying for the World Cup.
The country`s FA had attempted to introduce the code of conduct in 1997 but the players vigorously protested against the move.
Officials also told AFP that as part of efforts to ensure prompt release of players by their foreign clubs, a liaison department has been set up to deal directly with the clubs.
"The department will specifically handle arrangements at getting the players` release from their clubs abroad without any rancour," Ogunjobi said.
The NFA has often clashed with overseas clubs over securing the release of players for international engagements.
