Cameroon/Kenya: Rigobert Says Cameroon Intend to Stay On Song (06.09.2006)

Cameroon captain Rigobert Song who plays for Turkey`s top premier league side Galatasaray, yesterday said Cameroon had learnt a bitter lesson after failing to qualify for the World Cup finals in Germany and were keen to keep a clean record and avoid last minute desperate situations.
Speaking at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi, where the Cameroon players were in transit headed to their different destinations following their Ghana 2008 African Nations Cup qualifying group match in Kigali, Rwanda, on Sunday, Song said:
"We failed to go to Germany because we had not set out our priorities in the first place and realised this when it was too late. We do not want a repeat in our road map to Ghana, which we intend to use as a pointer to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa," he said.
Spain`s Primera Liga`s Espanyol goalkeeper Idriss Carlos Kameni said his side would not underrate their opponents. Cameroon are in the same pool with Equatorial Guinea and Liberia and are viewed as favourites to top the group.
"Our opponents are equally
interested in qualifying and we must be cautious on how we play because each team will want to defeat us," he said.
Song, pointed out that soccer standards were improving across the continent and one could not rule out any team basing on history.
"African soccer is improving day in day out, more players are finding their way to top leagues in Europe and it is just a matter of time before big changes are made at the helm. West Africa is no longer in control of soccer and with South Africa hosting the World Cup in four year`s time, countries in Africa will strive further to revive their football," he said.
Cameroon intend to use Kenya as their training base when preparing for matches in the eastern and southern Africa region.
Sports Stadia Management Board (SSMB) said the Cameroonians had been impressed by the country`s facilities and training atmosphere. Exclamation Marketing. A public relations company working for the SSMB said this was a step towards operation World Cup 2010. The firm`s sports manager Patrick Naggi said Cameroon, who trained in Nairobi before heading to Rwanda, had been impressed by the facilities.
