Indomitable Lions manage to stay top in Africa (25.02.2004)
By Martin Etonge
Though Cameroon had a disappointing performance in the Nations Cup, they have managed to keep their position as first team in Africa on the FIFA/Coca Cola monthly rankings for February. But the undisputed number one team in Africa for several years have now come within striking distance, especially from Nations Cup winners Tunisia.
Cameroon are 13th in the table - one place behind beaten World Cup finalists Germany and ahead of the likes of Denmark, Belgium and Portugal.
Because of the Nations Cup many African countries gained places. Making the biggest gains are new African champions Tunisia, who surge up to 31st place (up 14). Bronze medallists Nigeria (21st, up 14) make an equally impressive
impact to secure their highest ranking in almost nine years.
Senegal also moved up the table (27th, up 6), like Algeria (52nd, up 11)Morocco (33rd) and Mali (46th) both climb five place each. Meanwhile, Kenya (70th, up 6)and Rwanda (100th, up 9) secure their highest ever positions in the ranking.
There are few changes at the top: Brazil still lead ahead of France and Spain, and only Mexico (5th, up 2) and England (7th, up 1) manage to make headway.
The most significant movers outside of Africa are Jordan (47th, up 12) and China PR (78th, up 7). 73 “A” international matches were taken into account in February’s FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking including 32 from the African Cup of Nations and 39 internationals friendlies.
