World-Irish Slow Africa Challenge, France Reflect (01.06.2002)
NIIGATA
Ireland slowed Africa`s World Cup challenge on Saturday, holding Cameroon to a 1-1 draw after Senegal`s fairy-tale win over world champions and old colonial masters France.
Denmark, playing in South Korea on day two of Asia`s first World Cup finals, put extra pressure on France with a 2-1 win in group A over Uruguay.
Off the pitch, police in Japan, which is co-hosting the 2002 World Cup with South Korea, said they had arrested a 43-year-old Briton for trying to sell tickets on the black market, in what was apparently the first such incident of the tournament.
"Yesterday, we suffered a setback we are not used to," a dejected French coach Roger Lemerre told reporters on Saturday, the morning after his team`s 1-0 defeat at the hands of Senegal in the first match of the competition.
"We have lived in a culture of victory for the last four years. Now, our whole future in the tournament is under question."
France, with no goals, are bottom of group A.
African and Olympic champions Cameroon took the lead in their group E match against Ireland when striker Patrick Mboma scored a 39th-minute goal in the first match on Japanese soil.
Ireland, whose buildup was disrupted when captain Roy Keane was sent home after an acrimonious clash with coach Mick McCarthy, battled back in the second half, and drew level from Matt Holland in the 52nd minute.
Cameroon`s German coach, Winfried Schaefer, said his team was disappointed by the result, but he was not discouraged.
"Cameroon can play better. We can strengthen the way we play together. Will we cause a surprise? Who knows, but you should not underestimate the African teams," he said after the match.
Senegal`s 1-0 victory in the South Korean capital Seoul sent a surge of joy through Africa, a continent used to playing the underdog and added spice to the world of football just when it needed it.
"Senegal have redefined African soccer again. This is the new standard," commented Tony Nnachetta, a former soccer administrator in Nigeria, who with South Africa and Tunisia make up the rest of the African challenge in Asia`s first World Cup.
The result left France with little breathing space in their remaining group A games against
Uruguay and Denmark.
TELEVISION RATINGS GAME
But television networks and sponsors breathed a sigh of relief at an electrifying start to the tournament, which is not expected to attract the usual ratings in the key European market because of the time difference.
Africa starts this World Cup, the first outside Europe and the Americas and the first to be hosted by two countries, with five teams -- one more than in France in 1998.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter pushed through the change to deliver on a campaign pledge after he was first elected as head of world soccer`s governing body that same year.
Blatter, jeered by some sections of the crowd during Saturday`s opening ceremony, won re-election on Wednesday after a bitter and divisive campaign during which his critics accused him of plunging FIFA into financial crisis.
Nigeria, traditionally one of the most exciting teams on the continent, play hotly fancied Argentina on Sunday in the Japanese town of Ibaraki.
South Africa kick off their campaign on Sunday against Paraguay in Pusan, South Korea. Tunisia take to the field on Wednesday against Russia in the Japanese town of Kobe.
Cameroon, whose arrival was delayed by five days after a wrangle over bonuses and flight delays, are possibly the strongest of the five African nations, despite Senegal`s heroics.
They pulled off a similar feat to Senegal with a first-round upset against then world champions Argentina in 1990.
Ireland also have fond memories of 1990, when they too advanced to the quarter-finals under coach Jack Charlton.
Mboma, African footballer of the year in 2000, was upbeat before Saturday`s group E game. "We have the idea that we can do better than our big brothers in 1990," he said.
Schaefer said his team were nervous in the second half. "Now I must build up the team`s morale again for the Saudi Arabia game as they are disappointed with the result after leading 1-0."
In the final Saturday game, Germany kicked off against Saudi Arabia in group E in Sapporo, also in Japan.
Germany, traditional heavyweights of European soccer, were keen to make their mark after the disappointment of Euro 2000 when they departed after the first round.
