Barca unbeaten runs ends while Beckham returns for Real (15.11.2004)

Barcelona saw their lead at the top of the Spanish first division reduced to four points from Real Madrid as the Catalans lost their unbeaten record by going down 2-1 at Real Betis on Sunday.
Madrid, with David Beckham playing his first game in six weeks, had earlier romped to a 6-1 win over struggling Albacete to keep up the pressure on their bitter rivals who they face next week in the bi-annual derby match.
Betis`s Brazilian winger Edu opened the scoring four minutes after the break before his compatriot Ricardo Oliveira stole the show from Barca`s own bewitching Brazilian Ronaldinho.
Oliveira sambaed his way past three Barcelona defenders and then put the ball through the legs of keeper Victor Valdes to put Betis two ahead after 69 minutes.
Barcelona quickly got one back through a Gerard Lopez header and Samuel Eto`o nearly levelled the scores four minutes from the end but Betis hung on in a frantic final few minutes to deservedly take all three points.
The loss was Barca`s first in 11 games after going unbeaten from the start of the season prior to their trip to Andalucia although they are still in pole position in the Spanish first division with 26 points.
By contrast, Betis extended their unbeaten streak to eight games.
On a night when much of the talk was of streaks extended or ended, Real Madrid won their fourth consecutive league match.
Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane and Raul Gonzalez got first half goals to put Real firmly in control.
Argentine defender Walter Samuel then got his first league goal for the club since signing from Roma in the summer, with late goals from Michael Owen and Ronaldo completing the thrashing.
"I think it was my best game for Real this season. After a difficult start, in recent games
Ihave felt my old touch returning," said Ronaldo.
Ronaldo was the first division`s top scorer last season with 24 goals and has now got five to his name in this campaign.
Real stay in second place but now have 22 points, while Espanyol are third with 20 points after beating Racing Santander on Saturday.
England captain David Beckham showed little sign of his the broken ribs, sustained when playing for England against Wales in a World Cup qualifier, but showed little sign of anything else either.
His quiet night, overshadowed by stirring form the rest of Real`s `galacticos` and his England colleague Owen, was also tainted by picking up a stupid booking for taking a free kick before the referee had blown the whistle.
"I wasn`t intending for Beckham to play 90 minutes but circumstances forced me to keep him on," commented Real coach Mariano Garcia Remon, in response to questions about his lacklustre display and recovery from his injured ribs.
The `circumstances` was the early injury to Spanish international Ivan Helguera, who came off after 15 minutes after aggrevating an injured right knee.
Real later said that Helguera would have to miss Wednesday`s friendly international between Spain and England in their Santiago Bernabeu stadium.
At the other end of the table, Real Mallorca drifted to the bottom when they could only draw 1-1 with Atletico Madrid.
Mallorca took the lead after 26 minutes from a free kick from Juan Fernando Arango and continued to throw everything at Atletico goalkeeper Leo Franco for the rest of the match.
However, the Argentine had an outstanding game against his former club and Atletico snatched a point seven minutes before the end when Gonzalo Colsa equalised, to leave Mallorca still without a win at home this season.
