The ministry should encourage us - CB Messy, cycling federation president (29.07.2003)
The president of the Cameroon cycling federation, Claude Bernard Messy, thinks he is not getting enough support from the ministry of youth and sports to promote and develop cycling in Cameroon. In this interview with Martin Etonge in Yaounde, Messy talks on the need to train their coaches and raise enough money to sponsor cycling activities. He also talks on the federation’s readiness to organise the upcoming third edition of the Chantal Biya Grand Prix. Excerpts.
The third edition of the Chantal Biya Grand Prix is a few days to come. How are the preparations going on?
We are trying to get our act together. We are in contact with the foreign teams to finalise the programme. Normally, the race will take place on the 2nd and 3rd of August. But that has to be confirmed because we still have to make sure the date suits the foreign teams, especially those from Europe who are in the heart of their season. We shall be settled on that this weekend.
How many teams are you expecting to have in the competition?
We are hoping to have six teams from Europe, four from Africa and two or three from Cameroon, depending on the number of cyclists the national coach thinks fit to participate.
After the tour of Cameroon last February, cycling activities appeared to have slowed down. What activities do you have for the season?
After the tour we had a month and a half rest period. That should be why people had the impression that we had slowed down.
We launched the new season in May with a race in Yaounde. After that our cyclists participated in a tour of northern Italy. Unfortunately for us, we don’t have sponsors. So the lack of money prevents us from having races as we would have loved. We can’t respect our calendar of activities because of no funding.
However, we have in our programme many international races which, with the help of the ministry of youth and sports we’ll participate in. We have been invited to tours in La Reunion, Senegal in September, the All Africa games in Abuja in October and Burkina Faso in November.
We are preparing our cyclists for these competitions while waiting for funding.
The problem has always been money. But what about the cyclists. Do they have the necessary skills to participate and win in some of these competitions?
Honestly, I will answer no. The cyclists have the potential and talents, but they lack qualified trainers to get them reveal the talents and skill.
This is a major
problemwe are facing. I have been discussing this problem with the president of the National Olympic and Sports Committee, Col Kalkaba Malboum.
He has agreed to get the Olympic movement bring international experts to Yaounde to train our coaches during a seminar.
But the best thing for us is to put some coaches on long training courses in Europe. A short seminar in Cameroon will not be enough to prepare our coaches to face the challenges of developing the sports.
However, a seminar is a good starting point while we look for money to sponsor our coaches on training programmes abroad. Such a programme is big enough to also involve the ministry of sports.
Besides that you still lack proper professional equipment for the cyclists?
Exactly. All because we are poor. Two years ago the first lady Chantal Biya offered us six professional bicycles. Now we need to change these bicycles. We need spare parts.
Since they train everyday, the wear and tear of equipment is rapid. So we have to change them all the time. Worst, the cyclists don’t belong to clubs. They are totally sponsored by the federation. That is not normal. Worst still they are jobless.
We have been talking to some companies to encourage them create cycling clubs and recruit these cyclists into the clubs. This is the only way forward.
After the tour of Cameroon, the relationship between the ministry of sports and the cycling federation suffered. How is the state of your relationship now?
I can’t tell. There are many things which I don’t understand. I don’t understand what’s happening to officials of the ministry.
During the tour I heard many things. How we were not organised, we did not have even a medical team to cover the tour and so on. It sounded as if many cyclists died during the tour.
There was a whole campaign of bad mouthing and I was even ashamed for them.
Rather than encourage us to perfect our act, the ministry appeared to be blocking our progress. I was very discouraged. And if this continues, I think I will stop all efforts to develop cycling.
I have been informing the ministry about our organisation and normally, the ministry must give us subsidies, especially during international competitions. I hope the government will help us develop cycling. We are not doing this for our selves, but for our country. That is what I want officials of the ministry to understand. Let them come along with us. We are ready to collaborate with them.
