Less than nine days to the crucial encounter, the training programme of the Lions has been published.
As the date for the decisive match between Cameroon and Gabon counting for the third round qualifiers for the 2010 World cup in South Africa draws nigh, tension is beginning to rise among fans of the Indomitable Lions. The rising fever comes within the background of a new feeling of optimism triggered by the 2-0 victory of the Indomitable Lions over Austria in a friendly. After publishing the list of players shortlisted for both the away and return legs against Gabon next September 5 and 9 respectively, which has been acclaimed as just, Paul Le Guen last August 25, finally published the detail programme of the training camp of the Lions in preparation for the encounter.
As opposed to last time when the Lions had to train in Belgium for a match to take place in Cameroon, the Indomitable Lions, this time, will be training in Yaounde so as to get accustomed to the pitch of play and weather. The coach will arrive in the nation’s capital ahead of the players on Saturday, August 29 and hold a meeting with the technical staff of the squad the next day on August 30. The first contingent of players starts arriving in the country on Monday August 31 comprising Bikey, Bassong, Assou Ekoto, Alexandre Song, Eto’o, Makoun, Efoulou and Nkoulou. The second group arrives the next day in the morning including Eyong, Chedjou, Mbia, Kameni, Ngom Kome, Emana, Webo, Souleymanou, Nguemo and Meyong Ze. The squad will be complete by Tuesday evening with the last arrivals
including Rigobert Song, Geremi Njitap and Binya. Access to the players, both at the hotel and during training sessions will be controlled, though permitted. For instance, people will have access to the hotel of the Lions but not to their rooms. Journalists will have access to one of the training sessions of the squad but not to the pitch of play and request for interviews must go through the communication service or else journalists will have to rely on the a 30-minute press conference on the eve of the match on September 4.
A lot of water has gone under the bridge for the national football team ever since the beginning of the third phase qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with the resignation of Otto Pfister, the appointment of a caretaker team to assure the relay at the technical bench coupled with the appointment of a new Minister of Sports and Physical Education which culminated in the appointment of Paul Le Guen as new coach of the Indomitable Lions. As the new captain of the Lions, Eto’o Fils said, “we have the feeling of breathing new air in the national team” on the appointment of Paul Le Guen. This rebirth of optimism, coupled with the good performance of the players of the national team in their respective championships in the diaspora depicts hope for the Lions to turn the table in a pool where they are last after two matches. Winning both the away and return leg matches against group leaders, Gabon, will radically overturn the Apple cart in the group as this will automatically propel Cameroon to the top of the group before the remaining matches against Togo and Morocco.
