500 Athletes to Face the Chariot of the Gods (26.02.2004)
Most of the mountaineers are already in Buea.
Barely four days from now, Buea will host the ninth edition, of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope. The traditional Race of Hope will draw athletes from all over the country as well as foreigners who will either come to visit the famous town of Buea or to participate in the competition. As early as 7 am on Sunday, some 500 athletes will be visiting the kingdom of "Epassa Moto" the diety believed to be the god of the Bakweris. Already some athletes have started arriving in Buea for acclimatisation while others are putting up in Limbe. Most of the athletes from other parts of the country are training on a daily bases ahead of the event. Their presence in Buea gives them a chance to familiarise with the mountain before the D-day.
Prominent athletes like Sarah Etongue, Cathrine Ngwang, Kongyuy Shey, etc will be present. For more than one quarter of a century, athletes have come runing from all the nooks and cranies of the world. This year athletes from some seven
countries will compete in this mountainous outfit whose bowels are claimed to be hidding mysteries, a source of curiosity. Athletes are expected from some friendly countries such as Belgium, Burundi, United States, Australia, Nigeria and France. All the athletes will be lodged in the Mount Cameroon Football Training Centre in Muea, Buea. The town of Buea is already set for the event. The local organising committee is living no stone unturned to ensure a hitch-free event. Preparatory meetings are holding on a daily basis under the surpervision of the Governor of the South West Province, Thomas Ejake Mbonda. Some 650 portters have been registered.Only 500 hundred will be selected. The same number will be selected for the hostesses. The first group of officials of the organising committee of the race left Buea yesterday to finalise the ground work. The technical and financial assistance from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the involvement of the local community will give the event much steam and internatioanl concern.
