Indomitable Lions rebuild great image (24.06.2003)

Two straight wins in the on going Confederations Cup in Paris have given a new coat of paint to embellish the image of the Indomitable Lions battered by a ridiculous 2002 World Cup performance and a 3-0 dropping from Cote Ivoire last February.
But the team is still to attend their February 2000 level when they won the African Nations Cup. The similar narrow 1-0 wins over Brazil last Thursday and Turkey on Saturday should serve as encouragement, not accomplishment.
The coaches and players have too much homework to do, especially at the defence and attack lines. After an excellent and near perfect match against Brazil, the squad turned out sluggish against Turkey.
Two silly back passes almost cost them the game on Saturday. Luckily Lucien Mettomo was right on time and venue to clear on the goal line. The coaches committed the error of fielding Perrier Ndoumbe who had given his best against Brazil and was injured on the head. The Auxerre defender was down 50 per cent of his potentials.
The static formation of head coach Winfried Schafer may become his unmaking. Is it automatic that Idrissou Mohamadou should be substituted by Joseph Desire Job? Many observers have questioned.
This static strategy was the greatest weakness in the World Cup 2002. Opponents realised that once Geremi Njitab and Lauren Etame were frustrated in their area of predilection, the right
corridor, Cameroon were finished.
Schafer appears to be committing the same errors like in the World Cup by failing to make full use of the potentials on the bench. On Saturday Pius Ndiefi could have made a better substitute for Idrissou than Job.
The coaches have failed to realised that Job and striker Samuel Eto’o can not be on the pitch at the same time, except when it is a game formation with three strikers. Eto’o and Job have similar play style, built, speed and penetration force. In deed it was Eto’o who sent Job on the bench in the 2000 Nations Cup when the Lions recorded their best performance of recent times.
This weakness of fielding both players at the same time was very glaring on Saturday as Cameroon lost their striking force when Job came in. The Turks seized the opportunity to hit them hard.
The Lions were only saved by a last minute disputed foul in the area on Job. Geremi stepped up and scored the winner. But the referee’s error sparked angry scenes from the mostly Turkish fans, who threw bottles of water and other projectiles onto the pitch, while fights broke out in the stands. TV slow motion replays showed the foul was near the box, not in.
The lucky win has put the Lions into the semis, though they still have one more group game against the United States today in Lyon. They have regained the lost confidence of the fans. But should work harder to completely win the hearts of fans.
