Cameroon make flying start (02.06.2008)
Cameroon began their journey to the 2010 World Cup with a home victory over the Cape Verde Islands on Saturday.The match in Yaounde, one of 11 scheduled games which also double up as 2010 African Nations Cup qualifiers, saw the Indomitable Lions easily triumph 2-0 thanks to goals in each half from Rigobert Song and Samuel Eto`o.
Song, whose crucial error during the 2008 Nations Cup final against Egypt led to his side losing 1-0, made amends by opening the scoring after six minutes, before Barcelona striker Eto`o stroked home a 67th-minute penalty to give Otto Pfister`s team a flying start in Group One.
In the other Group One game, Westley Marquette scored and was then sent off as Mauritius threw away a first-half lead and had to settle for a 1-1 draw away to Tanzania.
The islanders took the lead six minutes before half time but Danny Mrwanda (70) equalised for the home team before Marquette saw red 15 minutes from time.
In Group Two, Costa Khaiseb`s 89th-minute winner helped Namibia open their campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Kenya.
The Southern Africans, who qualified for only their second African Nations Cup this year, took the lead through Oliver Risser (17), only for Allan Watende to equalise for the visitors five minutes before the break.
But Khaiseb had the final say as the Brave Warriors moved top of the group.
Ibrahim Sekagya was the hero for Uganda in Group Three as his 56th-minute goal proved decisive, handing the Cranes a 1-0 home win over Niger.
There were no goals in the Group Seven match involving Botswana and Madagascar as both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils in Gaborone.
In Group Eight, Rwanda claimed three points after an easy 3-0 win over Mauritania.
Olivier Karekezi (15), Said Abedi Mulenda (64) and Bokota Labama Kamana (75) were all on target for the hosts in Kigali.
In the group`s other game, early goals from Abdessalam Benjelloun (4) and Hicham Aboucharouane (12) helped Morocco beat Ethiopia in Casablanca.
Adekanmi Olufade`s 16th-minute goal in Accra gave Togo a 1-0 victory over Zambia in Group 11, despite the game taking place at a neutral venue.
The Sparrow Hawks are serving a four-match stadium ban because of crowd violence after a Nations Cup qualifier against Mali in Lome last year.
The biggest win of the day came in Group 12, where new Malawi coach Kinnah Phiri watched his side crush Djibouti 8-1 in Blantyre.
After Elvis Kafoteka`s second-minute opener, Essau Kanyenda (21, 46 and 49) hit a hat-trick, before further goals from Kenani Kondowe (72), Moses Chavula (80), Robert Ngambi (85) and Noel Mkandawire (90) completed the rout. Chermakh Maid (25) netted the only goal for the visitors.
Gabon`s Group Five game against Lesotho in Libreville had to be cancelled after the visitors failed to turn up, while the Group 10 match involving Sudan and Chad was suspended earlier this week by Fifa because of political reasons.
Eleven more matches are scheduled to take place on Sunday.
