Goodwill Ambassadors of the UN (10.10.2005)
An official ceremony would be organized today to confer the title to the national team.
Virtually all spectators of the Cameroon-Egypt encounter of Saturday October 08, 2005, went back home with a 2006 pocket calendar. The precious gadget, handed to all those entering the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium by stewards, had the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) inscribed on one side.
The action sought to increase awareness of the population on the MDGs adopted by 189 member States of the United Nations (UN) in 2000. The countries set 2015 as target year to achieve eight objectives. These include: the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger, the achievement of universal primary education, the promotion of gender equality and empowerment of women. The member States of the UN also pledged to reduce child mortality, improve
maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, ensure environmental sustainability, as well as develop a global partnership for development.
The special initiative of last Saturday was taken by the United Nations System, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sport and Physical Education and the Cameroon Football Federation. The icing on the cake was the designation of the national team, the Indomitable Lions, as "United Nations Goodwill Ambassadors of Sports for Development and Peace". The UN Goodwill Ambassadors are appointed by a cross-section of funds, agencies and programmes of the UN system. They are prominent personalities who lend their names, talents and time to support UN programmes.
An official ceremony is expected to be organized today in Yaounde to confer the title to the national team.
