Argentina to face Cameroon (02.01.2002)
Argentina are set to take on fellow World Cup hopefuls Cameroon in a friendly on February 13, that will be played on a neutral venue.
The game will be held in either London or Paris and will be Argentina`s first warm-up game ahead of next summer`s tournament, the country`s soccer association announced on Friday.
It has also been confirmed that Argentina will take on Germany in Stuttgart on April 17 and that the side were looking to set up a match against Belgium in Brussels on March 26 or 27, though that has not been finalised.
There was however no confirmation of a match against China to take place in Japan in the days before the tournament kicks off, despite claims from the China soccer association last month that the two sides were due to meet. However, it is thought Argentina will play a fourth friendly, so the China game could go ahead.
Argentina, who ran out easy winners of South America`s World Cup qualifying group, are paired in the toughest
first-round group in the World Cup with Nigeria, England and Sweden.
The Cameroon game is therefore the ideal preparation for the South Americans ahead of their Nigeria clash and it seems that was the factor that persuaded the Argentines to switch their original plan of taking on Denmark in February, to playing the African side instead.
That change of plan also appears to suits Cameroon. The Lions had pencilled in friendlies with Germany and Saudi Arabia in the lead up to the tournament, but then found themselves drawn against both sides in Group E of the finals` first round.
On December 9, the Cameroon Football Federation confirmed those games were off and that they were looking for new matches.
The last time Argentina played Cameroon at senior level was on June 8, 1990 in the opening game of that year`s World Cup in Italy, when the African side shocked the then world champions, beating them 1-0 in one of the greatest upsets of all time in international football.
