Indomitable Lions get tough World Cup draw (08.12.2003)
Martin Etonge
For the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon too reach the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany, they must pass through stiff opposition from Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire. Lesser challenge may come from Libya, Sudan and Benin who have been pulled together to qualify from group C.
Though fans and managers, just like bookmakers are confident that Cameroon as favourites should top the group and take the lone World Cup place, there are not minimising the quality of opposition.
For Prince Ndoki Mukete, deputy secretary general of Fecafoot: “It is a very interesting group, one full of memories for Cameroon. The opposition is strong so we will treat no team lightly. We have not forgotten our experiences with the North Africans and Cote d’Ivoire can always hold their own against Cameroon”.
Though the Indomitable Lions are African giants, they will be

expected deep hostile opposition in places like Cairo, Tripoli and Khartoum, where local fans will not take any Lions hegemony quietly.
Presently, the Lions command enormous respect on the continent as powerhouses like Egypt, Algeria, Morocco seem to be in turbulent moments. But they may get over the problems before the World Cup eliminatory campaigns begin next June.
Cameroon fans hope the qualifying campaign will be like the previous one, in which Cameroon lost only one match to Angola in Luanda. In spite of animal hostility in Libya, the Lions took three points after a 3-0 Patrick Mboma hat trick. Other points were harvested in Harare and Lome without too much labour.
Just like Cameroon, the future depends on performances of each team in next month’s Nations Cup finals.
