Foe honoured by SA 2010 World Cup bid committee (09.03.2004)

The South Africa 2010 World Cup bid committee has continued to honour Marc Vivien Foe by putting a wreath on the late footballer’s grave.
The Cameroon international who died on June 26, 2003 after collapsing during the Confederations Cup game against Colombia in Lyon France was buried in the centre of his sports complex still under construction at the outskirts of Yaounde.
On Sunday, African football legends Abedi Pele of Ghana and George Weah of Liberia who are ambassadors of the South Africa bid committee, led by bid CEO, Danny Jordaan and South Africa’s Deputy High Commissioner to Yaounde, Rina – Louise Pretorius, visited the grve and evoked their friendship with Foe.
The brief ceremony became reminiscent of the funeral of Foe as his mother and widow broke down in tears. In an emotional speech, Abedi recalled that Foe’s death was a great lose to the family and African football.
In tears, Abedi urged Foe’s family to take courage. “We know how heavy your sorrow is, but you must be able to overcome this big deficit,” Abedi said.
“We the friends will continue to stand by your side with the necessary support for you live on.”
Weah
too could not hold back his tears, but still struggled to say a few words to Foe.
“Small brother, the news of your death was a very devastating one, but God will help us get over this grieve. We want to assure you (Foe) that we’ll never let you alone,” Weah addressed the late footballer.
Similar words of condolence came from The High Commissioner and Danny Jordaan. A short prayer from Weah provided some relieve to the handful of participants who included Cameroon’s football ambassador, Roger Milla and Fecafoot officials.
South Africa’s bid committee CEO, Danny Jordaan said like the Abedis and Weahs, Foe was an African son who made the continent proud, so they had to come and honour the memory of Foe.
Helped by Milla, Martin Foe, father of the late footballer appealed for people of good will to help the family finish the sports complex. “The family is using its little means to continue construction work, but it not sure we’ll be able to get through,” Martin Foe said.
The delegation came to Yaounde after attending the burial of Evelyne Milla, wife of Milla in Japoma near Douala. Milla is also an ambassador of the South Africa bid and Jordaan said they were suppose to come and share in his sorrow.
