Cameroon edge past plucky Saudis (07.06.2002)
Samuel Eto`o struck a second-half goal for Cameroon as they saw off a vastly-improved Saudi Arabian team 1-0 to ensure their World Cup exit.
Everyone expected another heavy defeat for Saudi Arabia at the hands of the African Nation Cup champions and the only talking point was how many Cameroon would put past their hapless defence.
However, following the humiliating 8-0 defeat to Germany, Saudi coach Naser Al Johar rung the changes as he looked for some pride from his players and they were unfortunate not to have taken at least a point from this entertaining encounter.
The Saudis had the first clear-cut chance of the game after eight minutes when Al-Shahrani bent in a glorious cross from the right flank, picking out Al-Dossari alone in the box, but he looped his header over the bar when he should at least have hit the target.
They looked an entirely different proposition to the side that was rolled over by Germany, as they caused genuine problems going forward and continued to frustrate the Africans` forwards with their well-organised back line.
Cameroon were getting most joy through Wome`s attacking forays down the left wing, but despite good possession, they lacked conviction. Saudi Arabia were happy to let them keep the ball as they closed down space well and prevented the incisive pass.
Geremi carved out the first real opportunity for the Indomitable Lions with a raking cross-field ball that reached Patrick Mboma climbing between two defenders, but he was always stretching and headed high and wide.
The Saudis opened up Cameroon`s defence again when Al-Yami slipped the ball through for the impressive Al Temiyat who screwed his shot wide of the far post. At the other end, Lauren had a well-placed header disallowed for offside.
After the interval, Winfred Schaefer`s teamtalk had the required effect as Cameroon took the game to Saudi Arabia with much more urgency and immediately
forced a couple of early corners.
The introduction of Salomon Olembe also brought life to the team and he teed up Eto`o after a teasing run into the area, but Eto`o never composed himself and lifted his shot well over the bar.
Al-Yami tested keeper Boukar Alioum with a drilled strike and was then booked as he fell dramatically looking for a penalty when he contended the loose ball.
However, the direct approach of the Africans eventually reaped reward when Eto`o latched on to Geremi`s ball over the top and steadied himself before tucking his shot neatly under the advancing keeper`s body to open the scoring.
Cameroon briefly threatened to open the floodgates, but the Saudis stuck to their task and were more than capable of fashioning an equaliser. Their coach threw on more attack-minded players in the hope of clawing their way back into the game, but they could not finish off their good work.
The defeat means Saudi Arabia cannot progress to the next round, while Cameroon must try to beat the Germans next Tuesday to ensure they reach the knock-out stages.
