Yelaim 2006: Two Records Broken (10.04.2006)
Some 100 athletes participated in this year’s event.
It was an exciting weekend for the inhabitants of the capital city, Yaounde. The event was the 7th edition of the Yaounde Elise Azar International Athletics Meeting (Yelaim) that took place last Saturday. As early as 7:00am, adepts of athletics trooped to the Ominsports stadium in the Mfandena neighbourhood to secure comfortable seats in the stands. The weather was bright despite the prevailing rainy season.
Some 100 athletes from six countries in Africa and Europe took part in this year’s edition of the Yelaim. The countries that participated were: Benin, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, Mali, Cameroon and France. The athletes competed in eight disciplines in track and field- 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, and 5,000m races for the track events. The field events were: high jump, long jump, shot put, discus and javelin throws.
This year’s competition was marked by the participation of professional athletes from France and other African countries. Two new Yelaim records were created in the long jump and the high jump. Mbarga-Kinang Joséphine
jumped a distance of 6m41 in the ladies long jump event beating former record of 6m26. In the men’s high jump, Abdelaziz Mamaoui (France) created a new record jumping a distance of 2m14 as against the former record of 2m06.
The event was preceded by a competition for youths dubbed ‘Operation R.A.A.’ Some 720 athletes from 20 schools and youth organisations in the country participated in the competition. The aim was to prepare young talents who will replace aging chamions. Yelaim is one of the 11 laps of the meeting circuit laid down by the African Athletics Confederation (CAA).
The President of the organizing committee, Bernard Diuedonné Mbarga, expressed satisfaction with the performance of the athletes. According to the President, the organization of the competition improves each year. This, according to him, has contributed to Yelaim’s new status of a pan African label A meeting. He said this evolution will cause the organizing committee to work hard to reach the international standards so that the Yaounde meeting will in the long run be one of the important laps of the circuit of African meetings.
