Press Review… The Ghanaian Press Hails the Indomitable Lions (04.02.2008)
This was after their great come back into the competition.
After a befitting warm and hilarious welcome to the Indomitable Lions during their arrival in Kumasi , the Ghanaian press went to slumber especially after th shocking defeat of the Indomitable against Egypt. The few instances they made mentioned of the Indomitable Lions in their columns have been only in few pictures.
The reason behind the near indifference was partly explained by the heavy security around the team and inability of the Lions liaison officer to put in place a clear media programme. With fifteen days gone into the competition, media organs have once more focused their attention on the performances of the four times African champions.
According to the leading Ghanaian newspaper “Daily Graphic”, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon have shown that they remain a force to reckon with. In a half page post match analysis entitled “Cameroon Bounces Back”, the former Black Stars trainer, Jones Attuquayefio said, Cameroon needed to go all out against the Zambians and the Sudanese. Coach Otto Pfister used the correct approach to attack and unsettle the two teams with his ambitious tactical system of
4:3:3 that had three attackers. The attacking trio was aptly supported by a well compact midfield where the young Arsenal player, Song Bilong did all the tackling and provided a protective shield to the defence.
The “Graphic Sports” while saluting the brave Lions, zooms in on two major pillars of the team. According the paper, Cameroon has already grab two trophies at the 26th African cup of nation’s following the setting of a new goal scoring record by Samuel Eto’o and the 7th appearance of captain Song Bahanag at the final phase of the African nation’s cup competition. The Accra based 27-page newspaper notes that “Records are made to be broken, but the on going MTN Cup of Nations will likely marked an unprecedented new set of milestones for the continental championship.”
The “Daily Guide” does not only look at the Lions’ great comeback among the favourites, but throws a critical eye on the chances of the Indomitable Lions moving to the second round. According to the paper, The Lions must act first by imposing their style of play. The paper adds that, it is a match where bookmakers dare not forecast as victory will go to the team with a calm and strong mentality.
