Lions Get Down to Work (16.08.2005)
Players of the National Football Team yesterday began training seriously for the match against Côte d’Ivoire on September 4.
Centre Leonard de Vinci, Lisses, is not an unknown destination to the Indomitable Lions. For sometime now, this resort, located some 40 kilometres from the centre of Paris, has been the most sought for camping site ahead of serious competitions. Nearness to training facilities, the quest for tranquillity and need for concentration are certainly what has motivated Cameroonian sports authorities to develop a soft spot for the place. Once more, the Lions are at the centre within their first training camp ahead of their crucial encounter against Côte d’Ivoire on September 04, 2005 in Abidjan.
Under normal circumstances, the players train without much interruption from their fans who are ever so ready to ask for autographs and other petty favours. However, this time, Captain Song and his mates started off the camp last Sunday by sharing the centre with two other delegations — the Silly Nationals of Guinea and USMA Algeria, present for the same purpose. The tranquillity could therefore not be the same, especially as the Lions became objects of admiration for members of the other delegations. The first moments of some Lions at the camp site was therefore spent posing for pictures with other players.
Yesterday, however, the hustle and bustle in the lobby of the hotel greatly reduced after the departure of the Algerian delegation. Serenity returned and the Lions, in earnest, began training. All the 25 players called to camp took part in yesterday morning’s training session.
Focus during yesterday’s training session, that lasted some one and a half hours, was on
the physical fitness of the players. A lot of time was spent on physical exercises. Head coach, Artur Jorge, also took some time off to work on the play style and tactical options. Songo’o Jacques fine-tuned the skills of goalkeepers Ebede and Bekono. The team had their second training session yesterday afternoon. Latter in the evening, the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Philippe Mbarga Mboa, who is leading the delegation in Lisses, met with the players.
As of now, one Lion has been declared unfit to fully participate in the present training camp. Defender, Armand Deumi is suffering from an injury (tear of the left adductor longus muscle) he sustained during a champions league match last Wednesday. The chief medical doctor of the lions, Dr Atchou, says Deumi is on a therapy comprising massage, walking, bandaging, cycling, etc. He would be evaluated after one week. Meanwhile the lone newcomer, Vincent Pericard, has successfully integrated the group.
In effect, the present training session of the Lions started off slowly. None of the players respected the official arrival time of 12 noon. The first arrivals — Mbami Modeste and Achille Emana, were at 1:05 p.m; time during which the team was expected to be sharing their first meal. The menu had carefully been ordered by the medical staff of the team. Coach, Artur Jorge was visibly vexed by the turn of events, partly caused by the involvement of some players in matches on Sunday. He was obliged to cancel the Sunday afternoon training session.
Tomorrow the national football team will have a friendly encounter against F C Villemomble 93. The encounter, which begins at 12 noon local time, will take place at Parc des Sports, Villemomble.
