Women`s Triple Jump : MBANGO ETONE treasures gold medal (27.08.2004)
Upon returning to the Olympic village on Saturday with her Women`s Triple Jump gold medal tucked into her money belt, Francoise MBANGO ETONE (CMR) was greeted by her teammates and a contingent of fellow Africans.
The celebrations continued until the early hours of the morning when the 28-year-old from Yaounde, Cameroon`s capital, retired for the night, but sleep was impossible.
"I went to bed at two o`clock but I couldn`t sleep because I could not believe that I was the Olympic champion," she said.
In addition to all the revelry there had been phone calls from well-wishers at home, faxes from government ministers and, most notably, from the President of Cameroon, Paul BIYA. The transcript of that conversation was then read aloud on Cameroon`s national television station.
Simply put, MBANGA ETONE is a national hero in Cameroon on par with soccer star Roger MILLA.
Although she has a pair of World Championship silver medals from 2001 and 2003 as well as a silver medal from the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games, her Olympic victory was a big surprise. Indeed, she had been ranked only seventh in the world coming into the Olympics.
Her preference for training rather than competing frequently was in contrast to many of her competitors who journeyed along the European circuit.
A year ago she was living and training in Paris but parted ways with her French coach prior to the World Championships. She turned to the programme that Russian coach Victor KOUSINE, who trained her for two years at the national sports centre in Senegal from 1999 to 2001, had devised for her.
"I trained alone for the World Championships in Paris. I was really alone. I jumped 15m in Paris and trained alone but was second in the world," she said.
"I went to Cameroon and I said to myself, `next year is the Olympic Games.` It is the highest level. It is a technical event so I needed someone to look over me, so I brought my sister to France and we are staying together."
"She helped me with my technical training. She is 20-years-old and is going to school. She didn`t know anything about athletics or triple jump but I just told her, `look at this thing, look at that.` We trained little by little and that is why I prefer to train a lot more than doing more competitions. I haven`t got time to teach her how to coach me."
The jubilation of winning a gold medal didn`t last too long. Rumours began circulating that she had failed a doping test and it began three days of of denials for MBANGO ETONE and her management team at Global Sports Communication.
"When I
find that they were talking about a problem with my doping test, I know myself I didn`t take something bad," she said on Thursday afternoon.
"I said `now they want to to put me in trouble because they can`t accept that an African can win the triple jump."
"All the Africans in the (Olympic) Village. They supported me. I was very happy for that. My team was very angry. Everybody knew (about the rumours) but me. I was the last person to know what is going on outside. It was my manager who asked me if I had heard some news about the doping test. I said no. Then she said people are talking about it."
At first she thought that an interview she had given during which she commended the Athens Olympics as being the "Clean Games", made her a target. Then when the momentum built and it was being reported that she was going to lose her medal, she paniced.
"I called my people in Cameroon, they were calling everywhere to know if there are official papers to say I am positive," MBANGO ETONE remembers, "Then they told me that nobody contacted the team, nobody sent information by fax or e mail. Then our Cameroon federation called the IAAF and asked if they have any information about me. They said no, they had no information. Then they called the IOC president of doping, to see if they have official information. They said `no, there is no problem.` Then the chief of IOC doping said sorry for the bad news."
MBANGO ETONE is angry and so are her team at Global Sports Communication. They would like to trace the source of the rumours because it has spoiled her victory and tainted her performance. But the anger could be manifested in an improved performance at either of the two European meetings she plans to attend following the 2004 Olympics.
"Now they have to accept that I am strong (and that) I won the Olympic Games. They don`t have to put me down. It is not me they put down, it is my country (and) the continent they try to put down and they can`t because I won it cleanly."
"This morning I was really angry and I say, if it`s like that, I am going to the IAAF Grand Prix Final in Monaco and I am going to try to beat the world record. We have to fight for many things for a good image of our continent."
"I have Rieti and I have Monaco. I will try to do that. If I don`t do it in Monaco I have more than one year to do it. I will break my personal best first and then I will break the world record. And now if some people think I am using something bad, they have time to test me before I do it. I am strong, I know how I am training hard and I know what I can do."
