Cup of Cameroon 2001 : Pomp and Pageantry (21.12.2001)
All roads led to the precincts of the Omnisports Sports stadium yesterday, venue for the 42nd edition of the Challenge Cup final. History was respected with traditional dance groups displaying he flangs of the finalists (Fovu of Baham and Cintra of Yaounde), on buses and cars that plied roads leading to the stadium hours before the event. Few expected the encounter to be a crowd-puller, taking cognisant of the fact that the teams are not household names in the football annals of Cameroon. But these sceptics got it wrong. The population turned out in teeming numbers either to support their favourite side or to watch soccer. In the inner bowl of the stadium, the atmosphere was good-humoured. Diverse placards which were displayed, either conveyed patriotic messages or ere pregnant with meaning.
For instance, placards carried messages like : "Sport for all in the 3rd millennium," "Youth the hope of tomorrow", "Lets all fight corruption within the national sports movement", "Down with cheating, let the better win". Supporters of both team also added colour to the occasion with their placards which had encouraging messages in French : "Fovu club de Baham, club de supporters de Marché Central Yaounde", "Allez cintra, Comité de soutien du Lycée Bilingué". Understandably, the well-behaved football fans discarded firewhih could have marred the occasion. But the drumming and singing kept the spectators alive and in great
suspense troughout the encounter till the damaging "Golden Goal" against Cintra.
Thrilling performance
Those who cared to watch the match, gained more than just watching a soccer encounter. Before the match kicked-off, there was a thrilling ballet performance coupled with the exhibition of a giant map of Cameroon that highlighted the words "stability, prosperity, unity and peace". Those who believe in God and that He has a great role to play in football, focused their attention on Djonckep Bonaventure (coach of Fovu of Baham) who prayed discretely just minutes before kick-off. Though he smoked profusely throughout the encounter, the god of football gave credence to the fact that prayers pay, sometimes.
He was the main fours of attention for the crew of a private Japanese television station "NHK Japan". It has an audience of 80 million in Japan. The crew of four, is in Cameroon to carry out in-depth "sports documentaries" (mostly on goalkeepers) and, after December 28, the TV crew will leave for Mali, Burkina Faso, France and Italy. Though the event was hitch-free, some clever individuals who sold assorted drinks reaped rich dividends. A can of "33" beer cost 800 Cfa Francs ! "This is theft, this too expensive !" thundered a thirsty Cameroon Tribune journalist when he learnt to the price only after he had emptied the contents. He however paid, but only after raining abuses on the lanky seller.
