Commonwealth Games: Lessons From Melbourne (27.03.2006)
As the dust raised by the sports drama of Melbourne 2006 settles, each participant should be examining autopsy indices, ruminating on the lessons that emerge from its performance. Globally, it has been said, Melbourne 2006 was picture perfect, meeting all the objectives of the organisation, security and performance. While host Australia blazed the trail on the field of play other of lesser fortunes departed from performances of previous editions. Cameroon’s performance took a nose dive sliding downwards from a Manchester 2002 peak of 7th position and a dozen medals to today’s drought. Weightlifting that fetched nine gold medals in Manchester 2002 barely plucked silver and a bronze in Melbourne, crumbling under the weight of new rules and regulations in the art. The absence of those who lifted gold in the previous edition from the Melbourne team dramatically unravels the nemesis of Third World squads in an era of globalisation. By changing their nationalities shortly after the Manchester exploits, they left a vacuum that had to be filled by young inexperienced talents who strode into an international glare for the first time at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. It took a dose of near epic heroism for the young weightlifters to hold their own and provide the Cameroon delegation with two vital medals from a discipline that was expected to cough out more.
Besides youth and inexperience discernible in the weightlifting segment of the Cameroon delegation, there was the canker worm of non preparation that afflicted all the athletes. While South Africans for instance spent close to one month in Malaysia training together, and all others went to camping within and beyond their frontiers to sharpen skills and trim imperfection, Cameroonian athletes for the most part left their homes straight for Melbourne. The oft-quoted autonomy of sports federations did not appear to favour intense preparations for this international rendez-vous. In other countries sports federations take the front line under the coordination of the Olympic Committee to prepare their athletes for international competitions. In Cameroon the sports federations claim autonomy only to sit back, fold their hands and wait for Public authorities who finally bankroll all expenditure including plane tickets and mission allowances for federation Presidents. The inability of the federations to prepare their athletes told to disastrous effect in the heat of action.
In Melbourne, the Cameroon delegation was an example of disciple and concord in spite of interludes of mutiny that were quickly extinguished by officials. The athletes vehemently contested track suits brought from Cameroon for the opening ceremony, whose quality, it
must be clearly stated, left a sour taste in many mouths. Secondly, the issue of participation and medal bonuses drew a lot of heat from the youngsters. In a games village hosting over four thousand athletes from seventy-one nations and territories it is easy to compare notes and pass summary judgements on which delegation is at the nadir of preparations, equipment and bonuses for athletes. In twelve straight days Melbourne 2006 provided a first class sports and cultural jamboree. A culmination of seven years of planning and hard work, Melbourne 2006 showed how effective synergy between government, industry and local communities can reap huge dividends. In the rough and tumble of world sports, the Commonwealth Games, we have been told, provide the commonalty of language, a genuine harmony and friendliness not always available in any other international event. Melbourne’s specificity was not only the abundance of free meals and ravishing hospitality but also the integration into the main games program of four sports and twelve events for Elite Athletes with a Disability (EAD).
Medal Drought…
Boxing and cycling failed to meet minimum objectives in Melbourne. Out of four sports disciplines that Cameroon participated in Melbourne, two failed to reap dividends. Boxing and cycling were birds of identical plumage, arriving Melbourne with six athletes each and taking the flight back without leaving visible footprints for posterity. Boxing rumbled into action earlier in the games with Essomba Thomas, Njock Charles, Rivan Cessaire entering the ring at the Exhibition Centre in Melbourne. All three were booted out at the primary elimination stage. Serge Mvoue (69kg) welterweight secured a place in the 8th finals but failed to go beyond that stage. Two medal hopefuls emerged — Anaba Eric (54kg) bantamweight and Kaljob Samuel (60kg) lightweight fought their way into the quarter finals. At this stage, they met Nigerian and Kenyan hard punchers and crumbled under their overbearing weight. Kaljob received life threatening buffets from the Kenyan to the extent that the fight came to a premature halt. In spite of the optimism of the head coach Tchwen Justin, the realities on the ground were different.
Coming straight from the "Tour of Cameroon", the six cyclists of the Cameroon delegation and their coaches arrived in Melbourne a few days after the Games started. Given their individual records, it was evident from the beginning that no medal could come from that discipline. The trip to Melbourne however gave them the necessary exposure for future outings. The cyclists presented health problems that ordinarily should not come from active athletes fresh from international competitions.
