Cameroonian captain Rigobert had a narrow escape after an encounter with an irate mob outside a bank in Yaounde.
The Lens central defender had entered the Standard Chartered Bank for some financial transactions only to realise that a mob has gathered outside waiting for him.
Detecting the people`s fury, thanks to the diligence of the bank`s security guards, Song managed to sneak out through the back door.
He immediately escaped from the fuming crowd in a hired taxi.
It was only after the cab has sped off that fans were told that he was no longer in the bank.
Criticism
The angry Indomitable Lions` fans that gathered outside the bank told journalists that they wanted to lynch captain Song.
One of them
explained that: "He is too arrogant and snobbish by not caring to explain why the Lions performed so ignominiously!"
Song, who had enjoyed a mostly successful international career until the World Cup, had been a national icon for four years.
He skippered the Indomitable Lions to victories at both the 2000 and 2002 African Nations Cups.
But after the demise of Cameroon`s Lions in the just ended World Cup, Song has come in for much criticism from the Cameroon fans.
Many Cameroonians want the "Dream Team" disbanded and a new blood injected.
Others simply cannot understand how, in less than two weeks, another Cameroonian can earn CFA 42 million after playing two matches, in a country where millions are barely capable of feeding themselves.
