Four new faces in German World Cup squad (02.11.2001)
FRANKFURT,
Coach Rudi Voller has brought in four new faces for the World Cup play-off showdown with Ukraine on November 10 and 14.
Joining the 22-man squad revealed by Voller Thursday were three Bayern Munich players Thomas Linke, Carsten Jancker and Alexander Zickler as well as Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann.
They were all absent when Germany limped to a 0-0 home draw against Finland in their final group qualifier.
That result ensured that England won the group and qualified directly for the World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea next summer.
It also condemned Germany for the first time into a two-leg play-off with the winner joining the qualifiers.
The recall of Jancker was unexpected as Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld had said that he would not be fit enough to play due to an ankle injury.
The other suprise was the omission of veteran Bayer Leverkusen striker Ulf Kirsten following comments from Voller which indicated he would be recalled to sort out his side`s failings in front of goal.
Injuries have ruled out midfield quartet Mehmet Scholl (Bayern
Munich), Sebastian Deisler (Hertha Berlin), Joerg Heinrich (Borussia Dortmund) and Jens Jeremies (Bayern Munich).
On top of that, Bayer Leverkusen striker Oliver Neuville will miss the first leg in Kiev as he is purging a one match ban.
The German squad for the World Cup European zone play-offs against Ukraine on November 10 and 14:
Goalkeepers: Oliver Kahn (Bayern Munich), Jens Lehmann (Borussia Dortmund).
Defenders: Frank Baumann (Bremen), Sebastian Kehl (Fribourg), Thomas Linke (Bayern Munich), Jens Nowotny (Bayer Leverkusen), Marko Rehmer (Hertha Berlin), Christian Woerns (Borussia Dortmund).
Midfielders: Michael Ballack (Bayer Leverkusen), Joerg Boehme (Schalke 04), Dietmar Hamann (Liverpool/Eng), Carsten Ramelow (Bayer Leverkusen), Lars Ricken (Borussia Dortmund), Bernd Schneider (Bayer Leverkusen), Christian Ziege (Tottenham Hotspur/Eng).
Forwards: Gerald Asamoah (Schalke 04), Oliver Bierhoff (Monaco), Marco Bode (Werder Bremen), Carsten Jancker (Bayern Munich), Miroslav Klose (Kaiserslautern), Oliver Neuville (Bayer Leverkusen), Alexander Zickler (Bayern Munich).
