Have you ever heard of Indomitable Lions of Draught ? Many people will certainly say no. Yet, the team does not only exist, but it recently represented the country at the highest level of the sport — the World Cup.
Last September, the national draughts team was in Italy for the world draughts team championship. The squad comprised of five talented players: Ndjofang Jean-Marc, champion of Africa in 2000 and professional player in Holland; Kpoueugue Leornard, vice African champion in 2000 and 2004; Mbongo Thomy Lucien, vice
champion of Cameroon; Ndonzi Flaubert, professional in France and Baya Luc, champion of Cameroon.
Cameroon succeeded in qualifying for the second phase of the competition that took place from September 17 to 25, 2005. Two victories (against Czeck Republic and Ukraine) and one draw (against Russia) propelled Cameroon to this height. Unfortunately, the dream of the Indomitable Lions of Draughts to bring home the World Cup was shattered. Cameroon crashed out of the competition at the quarter-final. But it was a laudable effort.
