Zidane move seals Spain`s reign at top of the game (10.07.2001)
LONDON, July 10 - Zinedine Zidane`s world record
$66.05 million move from Juventus to Real Madrid did more than
just strengthen Real`s bid to regain the Champions League title.
By waving goodbye to Italy, Zidane gave a further indication
of how the balance of power has changed in European football.
The world`s top three players -- Zidane, Luis Figo and
Rivaldo -- all ply their trade in the Liga and Spanish clubs
have dominated in Europe over the past two seasons.
By contrast, Italian clubs have struggled in European
competition and as well as losing Zidane, Serie A is set to bid
goodbye to another world-class performer when Argentine Juan
Veron completes his move from Lazio to English champions
Manchester United later this week.
The dents to the pride of Serie A follow a season in wich
Italian football was riddled with scandals ranging from doping
and false passports to racism and violence.
For the Spaniards, who provided three semifinalists and both
finalists in the 1999 Champions League and two semifinalists and
eventual runners-up Valencia last season, the arrival of Zidane
confirms their status as the major soccer powerhouse.
SPENDING HEAVILY
The top Italian clubs are spending heavily but their deals
have involved players moving within Serie A and there has been a
distinct absence of fresh imports.
Clubs such as AC Milan and Lazio have tried to tempt the
likes of Rivaldo and Gaizka Mendieta from Spain and David
Beckham and Sol Campbell from England, but the lire does not
lure in the way it once did.
Last year, after Milan failed in a bid to sign Rivaldo from
Barcelona, the club`s vice-president Adriano Galliani admitted
Serie A clubs no longer ruled the European transfer market.
"I warned a few years ago that the television rights would
overturn the football hierarchy in Europe. That moment has
arrived, given
that the Spanish and English, for example, are
richer than us," said Galliani.
As well as lower television revenues, failure in Europe also
means that Italian clubs are missing out on the cash prizes on
offer for reaching the latter stages of the Champions League.
Whatever the gap between the financial resources of Italian
and Spanish clubs, what may hurt Juve fans more is that Zidane
seems to have been motivated by a desire to be at the top.
CLAIMING CROWN
The Champions League is the only major title Zidane has yet
to win and clearly the Frenchman believes he has more chance of
claiming that crown in Spain than in Italy.
Last year, Juve crashed out of the Champions League in the
first group phase while Real were one of seven Spanish clubs who
made the last eight in the two European cups.
Italy failed to have a team in the last eight of the
European cups for the first time in 19 years.
Some in Italy believe that Spanish football is flourishing
-- while the Italians flounder -- because of the different
attitude towards developing their own young talent.
"Look at Spain," said coach Marcello Lippi, now back at
Juventus after guiding them to Italy`s last European Cup triumph
in 1996. "At the moment that`s the showcase country of Europe."
Speaking after last season`s debacle in Europe, he added:
"Club officials in Spain have had the patience to invest in
their youth sectors and the big clubs have had the courage to
throw their best young players into their first teams.
"That`s what we need to do, too. I said last year that our
football must learn to promote young Italian players. I haven`t
changed my mind."
Lippi will now have a chance to put his belief into practice
and it will be interesting to see whether a promising young
Italian or an expensive foreign player is handed the daunting
task of replacing Zidane at Juventus.
