University Games Kick-Off Tomorrow (08.07.2005)
Some 1,182 athletes will take part in this year’s games.
The 8th edition of the University Games kick-off tomorrow in Dschang, in the West Province. The games which will run from July 9 to 16, brings together all six State Universities as well as other institutions of higher learning. These include: the Catholic University (UCAC), National School of Public Works (ENSTP), African Institute of Computer Sciences (IAI), Advanced School of Management (ESG) and Institut Siantou Superieur.
This is the second time the University of Dschang is hosting the Games. The university had the privilege to host the First Edition of the games in 1998. A total of 17 delegations (2,177 persons) are expected to arrive in Dschang today. 1,182 athletes will be competition in nine disciplines in track and field. The track events will include the 100m, 200m, 400m hurdles, 800m, 1,500m, 5,000m, 10,000m walk, etc. The field events will include the long jump, high jump, triple jump, shot put, discuss throw and javelin. Apart from athletics other collective sports disciplines are on programme. This include: basketball, football, handball, judo, lawn tennis, table tennis,
wrestling, and volleyball.
University Games 2005 promises to be highly competitive as each university is determined to have its name registered in the book of fame. The University of Yaounde I, Ngoa-Ekele, has dominated the games over the years. During the 7th edition organised in the University of Yaounde II, Soa, last year, the University of Yaounde I emerged champions with a total of 67 medals; 21 gold, 19 silver and 27 bronze. The University of Yaounde II, Soa, was second with 50 medals; 16 gold, 15 silver and 19 bronze. The University of Douala was third with 34 medals; 8 gold, 14 silver and 12 bronze. The Institute of Computer Sciences closed the medal table with no medals.
According to the Mme Emma Eno Lafon, Director of Assistance and Orientation, the Ministry of Higher Education is set for the games. "The only problem for now is the main stadium which is not yet completely set but it will be ready enough to welcome the athletes," she said. The Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education and the National University Sports Federation (FENASU), are living no stone unturned to ensure a hitch free competition.
