Lions Get Down to Work (05.10.2005)
Players of the national football team yesterday began training seriously for next Saturday’s match against Egypt.
The official camping programme of the Indomitable Lions ahead of their match against the Pharaohs of Egypt indicated that but for the training session of this morning, the players would fine-tune their skills in camera; far from interruption from their fans who are ever so present to ask for autographs and other petty favours. However, the second training session of Eto’o and his mates yesterday afternoon at the Yaounde Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium was watched by over 5,000 spectators.
The ambiance was warm. The public screamed and cheered the players as they simulated an encounter. 16 of the 23 players called to camp by head coach, Artur Jorge, were present. The players were divided into two teams with Jacques Songo, trainer of goalkeepers, taking the place of Souleymanou Hamidou, who, like his mates evolving in the Turkish league (Rigobert Song Bahanag, Kalla Raymond and Saïdou Alioum) as well as Djemba Djemba and Douala, were expected later yesterday night.
Focus during yesterday’s training sessions was on the physical fitness of the players. In the afternoon session, for example, a lot of time was spent on physical exercises. Head coach, Artur Jorge, also took some time off to work
on the play style and tactical options. Songo Jacques fine-tuned the skills of goalkeeper Pierre Ebedé Owono. Latter in the evening, the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Philippe Mbarga Mboa, met with the players.
As of now, one Lion has been declared unfit to participate in the present training camp. Defender, Jean Joël Doumbe Perrier of Stade Rennais, France, is suffering from an ankle sprain sustained last weekend in his club. The chief medical doctor of the lions, Dr Atchou Guillaume, says Ndoumbe will be off the pitch for one month. Benoît Assou Ekotto of Lens, France, will also not be present for personal reasons.
In effect, the present training camp of the Lions that was expected to effectively kick off on Sunday, started off slowly; a situation partly caused by the involvement of some players in matches over the weekend. It is only today that the entire squad will be together.
This morning therefore, the entire team will take part in the third training session. At midday, some players of the team, officials of the Cameroon Football Federation, those of the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education, as well as sponsors of the Indomitable Lions, would grant a press conference at the Yoaunde Mt Febe Hotel to inform the public of the state of preparedness for next Saturday’s match.
