Cameroon happy with narrow win (20.06.2005)
M. Etonge
Although Cameroonians did not see much goals in Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against Libya in Yaounde, they were all the same glad with the 1-0 win.
In a game completely dominated by the Indomitable Lions the salvation moment came in the 37th minute when striker Achille Webo headed in a Geremi Njitap pass.
The Lions’ opponents were tactical in staying in their camp and letting Cameroon do all the work, while hoping to capitalise on eventual errors by the Indomitable Lions.
The score line did not reflect the absolute domination of Cameroon. Within the first five minutes Cameroon had already recorded three misses. All along shots from skipper Rigobert Song, Geremi, Samuel Eto’o, Rudolphe Douala and Achille Webo misses target.
Twice in the second half Libyan goalkeeper Luis Alejandro stopped Eto’o shots, while in the 89th minute Eto’o’s beautiful volley went off target. Substitute Eric Djemba Djemba lost the last chance for Cameroon in stoppage time when he hit the ball on a falling goalkeeper Alejandro.
Cameroon stay second in Group 3 with 17 points, two adrift group leaders Ivory Coast who defeated Egypt 2-0 in Abidjan on Sunday too.
Reactions:
Loncarevic Ilija, Libya coach
I warned before the match that it will be a difficult one. My team played well, but Cameroon were better. They have better talented and more experienced players. My players got little experience and you could easily see this on the pitch.
I wish Cameroon
luck in their struggle to qualify for the 2006 World Cup finals but they have a very difficult game in Abidjan. I think the winners of that game will emerge Group 3 winners and go to the World Cup finals.
Rudolphe Douala, Cameroon striker
It was a very difficult game, but it was very important that we won. The Libyans played well and tried to trap us. We did not fall in their trap and we are glad with then three points of the game, no matter the score line.
Jules Nyongha, Cameroon assistant coach
The best thing to do now is to be happy with the win. We still have time to look at how we played. The most important thing was to win. For the moment we need to qualify for the World Cup finals no matter how we play. Our opponents of today were very solid. They forced us to play from our camp to be able to win today
I don’t have any regrets, but I think we need to improve on our game in the future. Our destiny is in our hands and we just have to win all the remaining two games. We take match after match.
Artur Jorge, Cameroon coach
We played against a very difficult side. We lost many chances. But I think we played under much pressure because we were always thinking we could concede a goal. So that made things very difficult for my team. However, I think we were better. We had a good game in the first half and I think the win is good too.
Now we start preparing for the next game which is against Ivory Coast which is also going to be a very difficult match. We’ll do our best to win.
