Volleyball : Lionesses Prepare For African Cup of Nations (26.08.2005)
Some 14 players of the national team are training in Yaounde ahead of the competition.
The 2005 edition of the African Cup of Nations ladies competition will take place from September 2 to 12 in Abuja, Nigeria. The competition will bring together the best volleyball teams on the continent. Ahead of this important event, some 14 players of the national squad are presently training at the campus of the University of Yaounde to ensure the best results. They are expected to train for two weeks. This will enable them to rehearse their skills and learn new techniques from their coach. During the first week emphasis will be laid on the physical capacities and individual techniques, while the second week will be mostly on the attack. Among the 14 players in camp, 11 are home-based, while three are professionals. According to coach Yende Tiadjoue Lavoisier, six professional players are expected to join the squad in camp. Three of them are already in the country. They are Beleng Rose, Messina Ondoa and Bela Vivian. The other professionals are Minsili Avebe, Ombassa Sombang, Tienchou Peron and the Libero of the team, Patricia Ngombi Ndolo.
The Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon finished third in the last edition in Nairobi in 2003. According to the captain of
the team, Carole Ambatta, they will do their best to improve their position and why not win the trophy. Since the qualification of the national ladies team for the World Cup in Japan next year, the team has regained confidence and group solidarity has been restored. It is therefore expected that the ladies will go for nothing but gold.
This year’s competition promises to be tough with host country, Nigeria, joining the competition. According to Carole Ambatta, there is no team that scares them but there are teams that must be respected. Nigeria won the All Africa Games trophy in 2003 and will be out to win at home again this time. Egypt, cup holders, will be out to defend their trophy. There is also Kenya which is another country that has qualified for the World Cup and has dominated the African female volleyball scene for quite some time. Other teams such as Senegal, Algeria, Tunisia, etc, should not be underestimated even though considered as small teams.
According to coach Yende, all the teams are strong and are preparing hard to be able to face the challenge. He said that the only problem facing the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon is the lack of logistics. He is however confident that the team will win, granted it has an adequate preparation.
