Lions Communion With Fans (02.06.2004)
Yesterday’s friendly against local side, Canon, was an opportunity for the senior national football team to reassure Cameroonians that they can still deliver the goods.
Indomitable Lions four — Canon Yaounde two. This is the final score of yesterday’s friendly encounter between the senior national football team and local side, Canon of Yaounde. This first appearance of the Lions in Yaounde, after their painful Tunisian expedition earlier this year, was more than just a friendly encounter. It was an occasion for the Indomitable Lions to reassure their fans of their viability. This they did by scoring four goals. The fact that three of the goals were scored by a newcomer, Tum Hervé who plays for Basel in Switzerland, could be an indication that the Lions might have finally found the goal poacher who they needed.
Generally, it was an interesting encounter with Canon putting on a stiff fight from the beginning to the end. Their relative lack of experience and expertise was however a major set back as the Yaounde boys failed to materialise the numerous scoring
opportunities that came their way. On the other hand, the experience and technically superiority of the Lions was evident, although not sufficient to convince sceptics. Jean Makoun opened scores in the first made things worse for Canon a minute later as he increased the goal tally to two. A few minutes before half time, Tum sent home another gaol for the Lions bringing the score to three- zero half time.
On resumption, the wonder boy from Switzerland continued his scoring spree with a fourth goal for the Lions; a goal considered by many as the best in the encounter. Thereafter, Canon took over the scoring baton as they hammered home two gaols within fifteen minutes. Yesterday’s encounter was a real warm up session for the Indomitable Lions as all the players were given a opportunity to demonstrated their prowess. This will certainly enable head coach, Winfred Schafer, to make judicious use of the talents at his disposal in next Sunday’s encounter against Benin. He has to put in every iota of tact to get good results and reassure Cameroonians whose support had been waning following poor results.
