CEMAC Cup: Cameroon Edge Chad (14.02.2005)
The Intermediate Lions won the competition for the second consecutive time.
The Intermediate Lions of Cameroon have won the CEMAC Cup for the second consecutive time. They elbowed the Saos of Chad 1-0 in the final match of the second edition of the CEMAC Cup tournament at the Omar Bongo stadium in Libreville, last Saturday. The competition, which ran from February 3-12, brought together six teams from the central African sub region. They are Cameroon, Chad, Congo Brazzaville, Gabon, Central African Republic and Equatorial Guinea. Cameroon’s goal was scored through a penalty kick by Bebbe Mbangue of Coton of Sport at the 21st minute. Cameroon and Chad picked their qualification tickets to the final during semi-final matches played last Thursday. In the semi-final matches, Cameroon, the top favourites in the competition, beat Congo Brazzaville 4-3 through post penalty kicks. Both sides separated at full time on a 0-0 score margin. The Intermediate Lions began the competition in a rather timid note. They drew 1-1 with the Saos of Chad in their opening match. They however corrected their errors in the second match
beating their counterparts from Equatorial Guinea 3-0. The Saos of Chad eliminated host country Gabon 3-2 to reach the final. The boys of head coach Jean Marie Djidiwa went to competition to defend the trophy they won in Brazzaville, Congo in 2003. In the classification match, Gabon beat Congo 2-1 to win the third place. The CEMAC Cup took place during the annual summit of Heads of State of the Central African region and it played in the country that takes over presidency of the institution. The new president of CEMAC, Omer Bongo Ondimba handed over the trophy to Cameroon’s captain, Erik Kwekeu. The sum of CFA 5million accompanied the trophy for the winners while runners up Chad, got CFA 3million. Third place winners, Gabon and winner of the fair play trophy, went home with the sum of CFA 1million. The competition was watched by the presidents of the CEMAC member countries. Cameroon’s Head of State was represented by the President of the National Assembly. The Minister of sports and Physical Education, Philippe Mbarga Mboa was also present at the final to give the Intermediate Lions support and encouragement from the government.
