Tough World Cup for Africa (04.12.2001)
BBC Sport Online columnist Mark Gleeson looks back on the World Cup draw which he believes gave Africa little to cheer about.
The World Cup was never ever going to be a rudimentary assignment but it got a lot worse for the five African countries who will be going to Japan and South Korea next year after the draw last weekend.
Frankly, there can`t be much hope for a strong showing for this continent past the first round save for Cameroon.
Nigeria, who have had lightweights like Greece and Bulgaria to deal with in previous World Cup performances, find themselves in a torturous group that is going to sap all their energy.
Against the odds
They must be wondering what they did to anger the Gods by being pooled together with Argentina, England and Sweden.
Senegal, albeit with the honour of playing the opening game of the 2002 World Cup finals against defending champions, and former colonial power, France in Seoul on 31 May, are also up against the odds.
Denmark and Uruguay are also difficult opponents, both having won continental titles in the last decade.
South Africa seemed quite pleased to draw Paraguay, Slovenia and Spain in Group B, with Sunday papers in the country proclaiming it an easy draw.

Tunisia, by all accounts, were also smiling after being grouped with Belgium, Russia and the Japanese hosts.
But why? They have no chance of coming through this group.
Flying the flag
It will be left then to Cameroon to fly the African flag, as they did more than a decade ago in Italy.
They, too, do not have an easy assignment but, in my opinion, have the quality to overcome the challenge of Ireland and Saudi Arabia in their group and go through to the second round along with the Germans.
You have to pity the Super Eagles, the other team on which Africa was pinning its hopes for a credible World Cup showing.
Argentina are the form team in world football right now and Sweden are on an unbeaten run this year that has seen them emerged as a side to be reckoned with.
England have also found salvation since Sven Goran Eriksson was appointed as manager.
Contrast the three teams with the plodding way in which Nigeria qualified for the World Cup finals and it all suggest the Super Eagles are likely to have their wings clipped.
It is a real pity, but such are the pitfalls of the draw.
