Good Start For Cameroon (23.01.2006)
The 3 — 1 victory against Angola has boosted the morale of the squad.
The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon got off to a very good start at the 25th African Cup of Nations in Egypt. The 3 — 1 victory against Angola during their first outing last Saturday at the Military Academy Stadium, Cairo, did not only boost the morale of the entire squad but also helped to restore confidence in the group.
It was an interesting encounter which saw Africa`s number one footballer, Samuel Eto`o Fils, reassuring Cameroonians of his commitment to propel the Lions to the final of the competition. The striker was in excellent form as he scored all three goals at the 20th, 39th and 77rd minutes of the encounter.
The Angolan side started off very forcefully. The 2006 World Cup finalists, propelled by an enthusiastic team of supporters clad in their national colours, created several scoring opportunities but failed to materialize them into goals. Eto`o broke the deadlock at the 20th minute when he drove home a free kick. Cameroon`s lead was not for long. The Palencas Negras equalized nine minutes latter when Amado Flavio scored a penalty following a foul play on Akwa. The joy of the Angolans was not to last for long as Captain Song
and his mates mounted pressure on the team. The efforts paid off when wonder boy, Eto`o Fils, nodded home a shot from Rudolph Douala to put Cameroon back on the rails before half time.
Although the Palancas Negras worked hard to equalize during the second half, luck didn`t knock on their doors. They created very little scoring opportunities. Eto`o sealed Cameroon`s lead 13 minutes to the end of the match when he fired his third goal into goalkeeper Ricardo Fereira`s net.
The good performance of the Lions notwithstanding, the team needs to work on its defense to avoid any unpleasant surprises in their next outing. Captain Song Bahanag is aware of this challenge. He said: "We are aware of the few lapses in the defense line. We will coordinate our actions better in the next outings".
Meanwhile, the Lions began training yesterday morning at their base in the 6th October City, located some 60 kilometers from Cairo. Serenity reigns in the group. Order and discipline are the watchwords. Next Wednesday, Cameroon faces Togo, the other World Cup finalist of Group B. Like Angola, the Hawks of Togo also started the competition on difficult note. They were beaten by DR Congo, 0 — 2 at the Military Stadium last Saturday.
