Boro close to Douala deal (07.08.2005)

Boro are edging closer to signing Sporting Lisbon star Rodolphe Douala.
The Cameroon international really caught the eye when he was one of Sporting Lisbon`s star men in last season`s UEFA Cup clashes with Boro.
He put in an electric display and scored the second goal in Sporting`s 3-2 win at the Riverside in March and then came off the bench to hurt Boro again in the return game at the Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon.
The 27-year-old flier can operate down either flank and up front and would give Boro boss Steve McClaren a whole new set of options.
Boro chief executive Keith Lamb is believed to have flown out to Portugal yesterday to hammer out a deal with Sporting officials.
That appears to have been satisfactorily completed.
Now Douala is likely to travel to Boro`s Rockliffe Park HQ to discuss personal terms - possibly as early as this weekend.
Douala, an international team-mate of Joseph Job, is desperate for a big money move to the Premiership with Boro in pole position of a queue of admirers.
Douala said: "I know there has been a meeting between Sporting and Middlesbrough.
"I have still not spoken to Middlesbrough but know that in these things the clubs first have to come to an understanding."
Douala says that he would love a move to Teesside and having played and scored at the Riverside in March, certainly knows what to expect.
He added: "I am 27-years-old and I have to think what is good for me. We will have to see what happens when I speak with the club.
"The English league is very desirable for me."
Boro are anxious to conclude any deal by Wednesday when Sporting play Udinese in the final Champions
Leaguequalifying round.
Douala has been registered as part of the Sporting squad for the clash but Boro would certainly not want Douala cup-tied in Europe if he is to feature in the UEFA Cup.
Another potential problem is Spurs, Fulham, Manchester City and Birmingham are also known to be interested with one of them also having apparently made a bid.
But Boro are clearly confident of tying up a deal for the exciting wing wonder, who could play on either flank, offering cover for Stewart Downing on the left and allowing Gaizka Mendieta to move into central midfield if needed.
Boro are also known to be working on a more complicated deal to bring in Douala`s Sporting team-mate Fabio Rochemback.
There are no work permit problems with Douala but Brazilian Rochemback, a central midfielder, presents a raft of potential issues.
Rochemback is a registered Barcelona player but has been on loan at Sporting since the start of last season.
It is thought he does not meet current work permit regulations in the UK. He is eligible for Sporting due to a special EC dispensation for Brazilian citizens working in Portugal.
Rochemback, who has played for Brazil, would certainly be another major asset and is another player who caught the eye when Sporting beat Boro in last season`s UEFA Cup clash at the Riverside.
The Gazette exclusively revealed that Boro were trying to sign the two Sporting players earlier this week.
Boro are keeping tight-lipped about both moves at present as negotiations continue.
McClaren said: "We are working to bring in two players and we feel that we can do it.
"But we accept that we have to take the long-term view and we may not get them in for the start of the season."
