     Cameroon edge Sudan (30.03.2005)

    Martin Etongue

Like in the first round 2006 World Cup qualifier in Sudan last year, Cameroon scored in stoppage time when they played host to Sudan in Yaounde on Sunday.

But this time it was a victory goal by Achille Webo who put Cameroon 2-1 at the end of the day. Although the Indomitable Lions dominated their opponents during most of the day, they failed to score until the 35th minute when Geremi Njitap converted a free kick into the first goal.

It was shocking for the over 30.000 fans in the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium to watch Haytham Kamal equalise for Sudan before the break.

The second half was similar to the first with Cameroon failing to finish up their numerous chances, until deep into five minutes of stoppage time when Webo connected properly a cross from Joseph Desire Job.

    Reactions

    Mohamed Abdala Ahmed, Sudan Coach

We lost because of the referee. You see he gave about ten minutes of stoppage time. The referee did not give us the chance to win. For two minor fouls he gave two yellow cards to the same

player and expelled him to make us play ten against eleven. At the same time he did not sanction Cameroon for many fouls.

We used only amateur players, but they have real ambition to progress. The Cameroonian side was very good too.

    Mohammed Iya, FECAFOOT president

It was not easy, but the most important thing was that we won the game. I hope next time it will be victory for us, even though the conditions will be more difficult that those today.

I congratulate all the players and other persons who worked hard for this victory. We are going to continue working hard and hopefully we’ll take the three points in the next game.

    Geremi Njitap, scorer for Cameroon

It was a very difficult game for us today because we did not finish most of our chances. It was not our day to score many goals, but we still won, we scored the most important goal at the end.

In spite of the difficulties, we still keep our chances of qualifying for the 2006 World Cup finals. We are still there mathematically and we’ll battle match after match.
