     Incredible Qualification (16.11.2009)

    Fred VUBEM

    Cameroon moved from the bottom of the table to the top with a four point margin.

    At the on set of the third round qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup, many Cameroonians thought Cameroon was going to have an easy walk over their opponents given the ease with which they sailed through the second round. However, this initial optimism gave way to despair as after the first two days of play, Cameroon occupied the bottom position with barely one point and were threatening not to qualify even for the African Cup of Nations which was reserved for the first three teams of the pool.

    In such a delicate position, the Indomitable Lions had to make no mistake as the only way out was victory in the remaining four matches. Not even a draw was to be considered as it was tantamount to sealing the country’s fate. This was not evident for a team which had recorded one defeat and one draw and was therefore suffering from a crisis of confidence. However, it needed only a team like the Indomitable Lions who are at their best when put in a difficult situation to do that. And the Lions did just that.

    With the coming of Paul Le Guen and the change of captainship from Song to Eto’o, Cameroon metamorphosed into the strike force that gave

    the team its name. A two-nil victory against Austria in a friendly set the pace for the new found winning spirit among the Lions. Two straight victories against Gabon on home and away basis propelled Cameroon from the bottom to the top of the pool. Even then Cameroon was not left off the hook as they were barely one point ahead of Gabon, the main challenger who could regain the top position anytime in case of any false step from Cameroon. Victory against Togo became imperative and the Lions did it in grand style, walloping Adebayor’s Togo, 3-0 at the Nfandena sports complex in Yaounde. With Cameroon on ten points and Gabon on nine, the spectre of the ultimate failure loomed as Cameroonians were haunted by the same scenario in 2006 when Cameroon failed to qualify on the last day of play after doing the most difficult part of the job by beating Cote d’Ivoire in their own backyard.

    Conscious of the stakes, the Indomitable Lions accomplished the extra-ordinary feat of beating the Atlas Lions in Morocco to qualify with four points clear from their closest rival, Gabon, who were beaten 0-1 by Togo on the last day of play. Such an incredible performance can only be put up by the Indomitable Lions who once more have proven that they are the veritable King of the jungle. Bravo to the Lions;
