Zambia: Ready to Shoot Copper Bullets (15.01.2008)
They are expected to go beyond the 1994 exploits by wining the Cup.
After the tragedy that befell the Zambian national football team when the military plane AF-319 carrying the team to Senegal for a 1994 World Cup qualification match crashed in the late evening of 27 April 1993, a new squad was quickly assembled with Kalusha Bwalya as captain.
At the 19th edition of the 1994 African Nations Cup hosted by Tunisia, the new team named Chipolopolo meaning “The Copper Bullets” defied the odds by qualifying for the finals against Nigeria. During the finals, the youngsters took the lead in the first half, but the Super Eagles quickly equalized and followed up with the winner in the second half. In spite of the loss, the Zambian side returned home as national heroes.
Though the loss of the national team is Zambian football`s saddest moment, the effort to the rebuild the side is remembered as a suitable tribute. Since then, the former “K.K Eleven” (named after former President Kenneth Kaounda),
hasbeen putting up dwindling performances in international competitions. The best win was on 3 September 2006 against Djibouti when they won by 10 – 0, while the worst defeat was against the Democratic Republic of Congo on 22 November 1969 when they lost 1 – 10.
To pick a ticket for the 2008 edition of the African Nations cup to kick-off in a few days, the West African team which has participated twelve times at the final phase of the tournament came first in pool 11 with eleven points, three wins, two draws and netted six goals.
Being the first of the sixteen teams to arrive Ghana, the Zambian side trained by Parick Phiri is expected to create sensation. This explains why he has put more emphasis at the attack with six strikers. Players to watch in the squad would be midfielder Cliford Mulenga, Ian Bakala and Rainford Kalaba, while at the attack, Chris Katongo, Dube Phiri and Felix Sunzu are expected to deliver the goods. Playing in Kumasi, they have been drawn in group C along side Sudan, Cameroon and Egypt.
